Review by Gregory Nath -- Fish Wielder
The novel Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a science fiction fantasy tale. The author delivers a comedic tale consisting of three main characters. There is a strong hero, an upright walking fish, and a horse of unusually high intellectual capacity. The story unfolds as the odd trio galivant through a fantasy land along a quest to rid the land from evil. There are many twists and turns in the story as they encounter strange beasts, odd creatures, and strange cultures. They also frequently engage in battles with oddly formed foes. For example, one enemy had elephant arms, a human head and was also immortal. Many unexpected whimsical interplays between the somewhat medieval land and modern society also emerge as the tale progresses.
The book is gripping from beginning to end. It starts with the reader getting the feeling that it was going to be a predictable story, but it turns out to be far from predictable. The writing style is lighthearted and funny, making the book an easy read. In many instances, the author (purposely) appears to be making it up as the story is unfolding; this added to the comedic tone of the book. I actually broke into outright laughter many times throughout the book. The author clearly intended to write a comedy, and he certainly achieved this with great success!
There is nothing negative that I can point out about the entire book. It was exceptionally well written and well-edited. The book’s title connects very well with the story and the events that unfolded. The main characters were all developed to a level that made the reader comfortable with the story. The supporting characters were introduced and developed sufficiently to combine with the main trio creating an outstanding comedic flow throughout.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This rating is based on a few factors including exceptional editing that was free of errors. The author intended to create a comedy based on a fantasy world, and he accomplished that. The book completely captured the reader’s attention throughout. There were no dull parts of the story or lulls in the storyline. Given the popularity of this genre, it is noteworthy that the author managed to produce a very unique tale.
This book is well suited to readers of all ages. The writing conjures up cartoon-like mental images in the reader’s mind that would be enjoyed by young audiences. It is also great fun for adults seeking a lighted-hearted comedy with some unexpected and extremely funny twists!
