We Are Voulhire A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a mystery/fantasy book that follows the perspectives of different characters simultaneously, who are complex but realistic. The book is based in a mythical country of Voulhire, with a violent history ruled by monarchy. It touches upon the world of magic and the connections between the different realms of the multiverse, mainly Cosmos, the physical universe and Caromentis, the magic universe. The book absorbs you with its style of detailed writing, riveting storyline, engrossing characters and mounting tension.

I enjoyed reading We Are Voulhire A New Arrival Under Great Skies for the build up of the story through the introduction of different characters and the their personal lives. The book is centered around Galen,a young man who escapes the cruelties of the Land of the Princes after the demise of his Uncle who leaves him to be the heir to his business. And thus begins his adventure into the country of Voulhire, ruled by King Wilhelm. The story is told in different perspectives of the characters in the book, which I liked. It gives you and idea of the intentions of the characters going forward. The author has cleverly used the premise of a monarchy and magical power play to draw one into the mystical multiverse.

The story starts with the arrest of Lord Orlin by Magistrate Meldorath, who later goes onto ascend as the Lord of Hillport, a city in the land of Voulhire. Followed by the introduction of the protagonist, Galen who seems to completely oblivious to the things happening around him in the beginning but catches on soon enough. With the different characters adding on in later part of the book and the various subplots, it is quite overwhelming. The story is slow paced but the details are significant to know the world being built up by the writer. Alternating chapters with the perspectives of the characters make it an interesting read and easier to follow the storyline.

The book is an interesting tale filled with elements of politics, greed, innocence, deceit and magic. The author's world building with little tricks and mysteries here and there is enthralling. The prose is described beautifully and is easy to imagine the world that is being built by the author. The character development is phenomenal. They are described in detail. Little moments of what makes them who they are and why they act the way they do add in depth. Also, as much I appreciated the book, the use of modern and medieval language at the same time did not sit well with me but that did not take away from my experience of the book. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars for its character development in a short time, the ability to rein you in with the little anecdotes that shed light on the intention and character of the people in the story. The story is captivating and well balanced.

I would recommend this book for people upwards of 16 years of age since it does contain some sexual references but no sex. There is some violence but it is not graphic in nature. It is well edited as well. The book will be loved by people who like to get lost in a world different than their own and aroused by their curiosity provoked. P.S: The book ends in a cliffhanger.
