Voulhire is entering into the golden age of prosperity. No city in Voulhire is flourishing more than Virko with its industrialism and ash-covered streets. The current lord/founder of this great city is dying. Lord Venden Hrelek is trying to bring about change in capitalism and the government before he leaves this world. However, his son seems to have different plans for the great city.

Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius find themselves right in the mix of it all when they arrive in Virko. Their mission is to ensure the iron promised by the late Lord Eldus still arrives in Magnum Caelum. Upon meeting the dying lord, Demetrius is asked to handle a far greater matter. In exchange, the lord will ensure the original plans for the iron remain intact. Will the trio succeed in both missions? Will the city of Virko find the change they desire?

We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second installment to the Voulhire series. It takes us on an adventure of magic, spirituality, and humankind. Matthew Tysz introduces us to an array of fantastically, well-developed characters. We get a further glimpse into Demetrius’s character, and it left me wanting more. The friendship developing between Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius reminds me of a trio of misfits. They frequently leave me laughing.

Two of the more prominent characters we meet are Hans Hrelek and Lord Kayden Morgan. Two estranged friends who were once extremely close. As their story unravels, I felt myself take sides only to have everything shift. Matthew Tysz knows how to make a reader feel like they are living the story. He possesses a true affinity for his craft.

One of my favorite things about this series is the ability to drag you in right from the start and keep you suspended throughout its entirety. I found myself unable to set the book down. I frequently noticed myself shaking my head and gasping/laughing out loud. At one critical point, I was practically in tears. It was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions, suspense, and intrigue. I loved every minute of it.

The sole thing I disliked about the book was the way some things were left up in the air. I cannot elaborate more without giving away some serious spoilers - sorry.

There are some darker tones to this book. Violent scenes, sexual assault, and language should be noted before electing to read. Any fan of fantasy will most likely enjoy the book. I would say the Voulhire series is targeted at a mature audience due to the graphic nature.

We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is an exceptionally written fantasy novel. I can genuinely say it has been professionally edited as I discovered no errors. It is an action-packed, thrilling adventure. I happily award it 4 out of 4 stars. I cannot wait to see what book three has in store.
