Review by Mahak Sharma -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival...
We Are Voulhire:A New Arrival Under The Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first installment of this series. Land of Princes, a place under civil war. When the king suspected that his sons are going to oppose him he thought of a plan. He gave his sons one Island each and the sons started fighting each other instead of the King. Galen Bray, a normal civilian trapped in this mess, wanted to get out of the country and the opportunity came to him when his long lost uncle sends him papers that would get him the heck out of this place to the kingdom of Voulhire.
Voulhire...a country of magic and mages. The mages get their magic from the mysterious world of Caromentis; the world opposite to their world Cosmos. Nobody's been to this world and many don't even believe in it. But it has some sort of connection with their world of Cosmos, according to the mages. There were many great mages in the land. Meldorath being one of them. While he was once the Lord of Hillport, but after he was arrested rumours spread that he had died. Hillport had already lost its two Lords in one year; both Lord Orlin and Lord Meldorath when the new lord Eldus arrived. The townspeople were hurt both mentally and financially when Eldus came. They were distrusting him and also had a fear within them if Meldorath is dead or not. Eldus tried to change the situation of Hillport and also gain the trust of people. On the other hand, Galen reached Magnum Caelum and decided to take over his uncle's profession, a blacksmith. He and his executor came across a strange rock that was suspected to be connected with Caromentis. Between all of this, there was also rumours of Riva Rohavi; a terrorist organisation resurfacing but it was kept confidential between the King and his peers so that the public doesn't get scared.
The first thing that I liked about this book is that all of the characters are like dots somehow connected. As it is the first book of a series, so it acts like a base for the whole story. The book is divided into chapters and each chapter focuses on one character. There would be some points where the story slows down and gets a little bit confusing but it recovers from it quickly. In short, the book is worth reading.
So, I would like to give this book 4 out of 4 stars. Also, there is a map of Voulhire in the beginning and a glossary for new terms and words at the end of the book for better understanding that helps a lot.
It is a great book for those who like magic and fantasy stories and this book will let you dive into a new world. If you like medieval stories then you would find the book interesting. Though there aren't any sexual or irrelevant scenes there are some instances of child assault. But they aren't discussed too deeply. So, if people who aren't comfortable with such topics shouldn't read it.
