Review by RoGo -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
The adventure of the We are Voulhire series continues in this exciting book. We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the fascinating world of Voulhire.
Virko is the fastest growing industrial city in Voulhire and is a target for forces trying to take rule of the city. Lord Venden Hrelek is the current lord of Virko and he was the lord that made Virko so productive and prosperous. But times are changing. Lord Venden is very ill and not fit to rule anymore, but his son and successor, Hans Hrelek has his own plans regarding the rule of the city. On his last days Lord Venden decided that a captain appointed by the king would be better to rule the city. In the background the church is also trying to lay claim to overtake the city. In the midst of all this, unknown to all the residents of Virko, lays a great secret and a certain powerful dark force, waiting to be unleashed.
In the innocent town of Magnum Caelum, Galen is still trying to master his skills in the forge with the help of his two friends. After the events of the first book, Galen founds himself traveling with Rowan and Demetrius to Virko. He has to secure an iron supply from the prosperous city, but the cost might be too much for him and his friends.
The book continues in the theme of the first book of science, faith and magic. This time the book includes dark schemes and an underground group that was formed by the antagonist of the story. It makes the book so much more realistic and relatable. Galen stays true to his character of being kind and even naïve at times, but it gives the reader a lighter side of the story in the middle of the dark plot.
What I like most of the book is how it keeps the reader intrigued throughout the whole book. The whole fantasy world is unique and so well constructed. The author did an amazing job with all the characters and their own unique stories and adventures. Something that also stood out for me was how the author included a character that was homosexual and it was so fascinating to read about his experiences and troubles with his orientation.
There was not a single thing in the book that was a negative aspect for me. There were no errors that I could see in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and can’t wait to read the third book of the series. I would give the book a rating of 4 out of 4.
I would recommend the book to any young adult that likes fantasy, magic and adventure. The book is not suitable for younger readers due to strong language and mature content.
