Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius go to Virko, the Voulhirian city widely known for its industrialization and riches, to buy iron for the forge back at Magnum Caelum. On getting there, they discover that the person in the best position to strike a deal (for iron) with is the lord of Virko himself, Lord Venden Hrelek. The good Lord who happens to be very ill promises the trio an iron reserve for Galen's home and forge at the price of exorcising a demon that he suspects lives in his house. A demon that he fears his son and only child is involved with.

The trio must figure out a way to safely banish the demon but they soon come to realize that doing so will be harder than they anticipated. In addition to that, they find themselves stuck trying to save a city that is brimming with crooks and greedy people who will stop at nothing to enrich and grab power for themselves, even though it means that Virko will fall.

We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz continues a few days after the end of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies (which is the first book in the We are Voulhire series). This book took a very different turn from what I imagined that it would look like after reading its prequel. For instance, there was not much splendid display of magic like I expected and I sure didn't expect to see a lot of our modern-day inventions in a book like this. The one thing that positively caught me off guard above all else is the mention of homosexual (main) characters. Now, it isn't unheard of that characters that belong to the LGBTQ+ community play major roles in certain novels. What I have never seen is characters like that in a magic fantasy novel. This is a first for me and I love it. In fact, this is what I liked above all else in the book.

The one thing that I disliked is the absence of a female character playing a major role. Although I found the book interesting, I couldn't help but notice that all of the major characters are guys. This made me a tad bit disappointed.

Nevertheless, 4 out of 4 stars is what I rate this book. The grammar, the interesting storyline, the usual writing style, humor, and professional editing in the book are the reasons for the perfect rating above. Apart from the lack of female characters playing major roles, I absolutely loved this book. That single dislike did not take anything away from my enjoyment of the novel thus the 4 stars. That said, I recommend this novel to magic and fantasy enthusiasts. However, I must say that this book cannot be read as a stand-alone, so if it piques your interest, I advise that you first read its prequel, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies.
