The novel We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, by Matthew Tysz, is a medieval fantasy that set in a magical world. The book begins with the introduction of the main character, Galen Bray. Galen lives in a war-torn region known as “The lands of the Princes”, but his fortune suddenly changes with the death of an estranged relative. The book then follows Galen’s adventure to accept his inheritance and begin a new life in a prosperous new region. Each region in this world has unique features that are described in detail. These include different laws, political wrangling, and economic strengths. Along with the main character development, many other interesting characters are introduced as the book progresses.

The author's writing style clearly demonstrates an amazing ability to describe the strange world and capture details of the environment. The reader can easily visualize the environment including the sounds, smells, and tastes with vivid accuracy. The characters are sensibly developed with enough details and background to keep the reader interested. The inclusion of a map and link to more reference material adds to the intrigue and provides the reader with lots of details. This is useful in building the saga since this book is the first installment of a nine-part series. It allows the reader to achieve significant buy-in to the story for future installments.

The chapters may have been better organized if a numbering system was used in addition to character names. The story jumps from place to place and story to story with progressive chapters. This had the effect of unplugging the reader from the current character and then immersing the reader into a whole new facet of the story. While not completely seen as a negative; this style of organization may serve the reader better if there was a little more of a cohesive flow.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The rating is based on exceptional editing, that was completely error-free. Even with the negative aspects mentioned earlier, I found the book gripping from beginning to end. This clearly indicates that the author achieved his goal of capturing the audience. The author states that this is the first installment. As such, the intention was to set the stage of what is to be a long and intricate tale. I found that he was highly successful in creating this platform.

I believe this book is most suitable for a young adult audience. It may not be ideal for children since it contains some use of profanity. The book is a fantastic read for adults interested in the genre and most enjoyable for those seeking to immerse themselves in a different world.
