Mystery started in the beginning of the story, when two goblins – Tuk, the young goblin and Kos, the older and temperamental goblin – found a man lying unconscious next to a river. The man wore armor and has a sword. When he finally woke up, all he can remember was the city of Havenbrook and that may be he will have his memories back and the reason behind the burn in his left arm by heading to Havenbrook.
Hoping to get some reward for the man who looks like from a wealthy family, the two goblins decided to take him to Havenbrook. However, fate had different plan. The goblins did not get what they want. Instead, they had to face tragic future. Meanwhile, the man successfully entered Havenbrook.
The man recognized some corners of the city, but not exactly the same like the flash of his memories. He was almost sure that he has lived in Havenbrook before, but it was strange that nobody recognize him. In Havenbrook, he met Lord Brukahn who suggested him to meet wizard Norlun. Somehow, the name Norlun sounded familiar to him.
Together with Liniana – daughter of Lord Brukahn - the man started the journey to found Norlun. The man was later called Tirene, named after Liniana’s dead brother.
Not much action at the beginning of their journey. They met a lot of people, but none of them gives a single clue about Tirene’s past. The incident that alerts them that there might be more danger waiting is when they found the lifeless body of Brant – their companion – dangling from a tree.
They lose a companion, but there will be more joining their group. There will be Jaeden, a young boy gambler who has a talent to swing a sword. There will be Matt, an ex thief who was captured by Tirene. Also, there will be Milenthia who has telepathy ability.
The bond between Tirene and Jaeden grows stronger. I think Tirene sees Jaeden as a younger brother. Love also sprouted along the journey between Tirene and Liniana. But when his memories strikes back, Tirene began to doubt his love to Liniana
There are so many mysteries in this story. Moreover, what makes this story more interesting is how the mystery revealed. Bite by bite, and it makes you crave more. I’m dying waiting for the real action of Tirene and hoping there will be more mysteries revealed in the second book, especially about what Norlun actually wants from Tirene and who Turl really is. I wonder if the thread of life will meet the two of them together again, as an enemy or as an ally. Well done, J.G. Gatewood. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
