Review by Krishnajee100 -- The Devil Pulls the Strings
Boone Daniels is a musician and joust fighter with a guilt-ridden past. Now he nearly kills his best friend during a joust, making the guilt overwhelming. As repentance, he promises his injured best friend to fill in for a Saturday gig in NYC. But life's never been so easy on him. So after reaching New York, Boone finds his world has turned upside down. He witnesses the gig's contact murder and has to get away from some gunned men. Through meeting some significant people, making new friends and unraveling mysteries, he finds himself in the middle of a brewing war between secret societies. One immortal human with his vampire companions wants to acquire Paganini's music and summon the Devil through it, or else Baba Yaga, a supernatural being, will wake up from her decades-long slumber and unleash her wrath on the New York City. With the future of NYC at the stake, how will he come out as a savior? Or will Boone have to sacrifice his life to fulfill the promise to his friend?
J. W. Zarek has created every character of this story individually interesting. Specially the main character, Boone, with his easygoing gentleman personality. His feelings, both as a brave fighter and a person fearing the demon of darkness, make him emotionally relatable, and are expressed quite well by the author. The concepts of time travel and past-revealing dreams just add to the mythical elements of the book.
The Devil Pulls the Strings just enraptured me as a reader. The author's unique writing style has made the unfolding story feel more like watching than just reading. This story travelled through Wentzville, New York, and Genoa, Italy. And the book is based on a first-person point of view. The gripping plot made it a definite page-turner. The action scenes are vividly described. Questions are left unanswered throughout the book that seemed confusing at first, but as the story progressed further, provided me with many 'ooh!' moments.
The book has very few typos. So it seems safe to say that it's professionally edited and left nothing much to complain about.
I have tried reading this book a second time and found it no less delightful, so I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars .
I would like to recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action-packed thriller or paranormal fantasy. The book has the promise of a series, and I hope I will get to read more about Boone and his adventurous life soon.
