Review by Caleb 044 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
The novel We are Voulhire; Fires at Virko is the second book of the series of books We are Voulhire by Matthew Tysz. This is a fantasy and fictional series of books. Galen continues telling us the story from the first person point of view and this time he is assisted by an anonymous narrator. There are characters such as gods, demigods also known as mages, humans and also in this second book we are introduced to demons. All these groups of characters are trying to compete for their rightful place in the world. From the Novel, we find Virko being one of the most Industrial cities in the great kingdom of Voulhire. Due to its industrial nature, there is a split between the social classes; the rich and the poor. In Virko, the poor are always trying to work hard to become rich, but the rich do not want this. There is a constant competition of resources among the various groups of people.
Virko has its fair share of both blessings and curses. It is blessed in terms of its rich industrial nature. This brings about its problems as it brings about envy from other sources of competition. Virko is attacked by some evil forces which bring about fear and tension all over the city. The people of Virko, lead by Dragon, try to negotiate a deal with these forces; the question is, will they succeed?
The book contains themes such as corruption, capitalism, greed, oppression, suffering and also the theme of death. Although this is a fictional novel, we can at least learn a few things that we can apply in our daily lives. This is because in the book we are shown the consequences of such evil acts.
What I liked most about the book was the language use and also the choice of words used by the author. For example, the author says, “… these were not just trees, but rivers of flesh,” this is to refer to the many people on the streets. I also liked the fact that the author has attached a map at the beginning of the book. This is to enable us to get the geographical setting of various places like Virko, Magnum Caelum, Soulhire and many more places. Likewise, I enjoyed the flow of the plot and how the story starts slowly and gradually rising to its climax. I found nothing to dislike about the book.
I would confidently give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the book was very engaging right from the start to the finish. The book was professionally edited and hence I did not find any spelling or grammar mistakes. Beware; there is the use of profane language in the book. I would recommend this book to adults and maybe older teenagers who are comfortable with the use of profane language and have also read the first book of this series We are Voulhire; A New Arrival under Great skies.
