Review by John Ogada -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival u...
Galen Bray is from the land of the Princess which is torn by war. The war, popularly known as the "War of the Princess", causes so much devastation and fear. Young men are often targeted to be recruited as soldiers. However, one day, Galen receives a letter that would likely be his salvation. A long forgotten uncle of his, who was even presumed dead, wants Galen to go to Voulhire and take over his forging business since his health was deteriorating and he would die soon. Will Voulhire's new skies in We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz offer the promise of a new peaceful life?
The book has well-defined characters, most of who I loved, especially Galen Bray and Dalehei Meldorath. Galen, even though he seems quite frail and lacking direction, is likable. I should have seen the excitement on his face when he finally got into the ship into his refuge, Voulhire. I think he is also a honest (and innocent) character. He tells an old man, who seems to be more of an entertainer in the ship, so much about himself. This would be very risky considering the situation back at his home country. Wouldn't anyone be afraid someone might return the word that he was trying to escape? Galen either wasn't, or was just adamant of the possibility.
Meldorath, on the other hand, is the strongest, almost invincible, character that I have seen. He easily handles well-trained soldiers, some of which are mages (magicians) without difficulty when he went to fight Lord Orlin. In fact, from the author's description, he seems to fight them off with such an ease as moving objects with his mind. He also seems to love justice. He confronts and kills Lord Orlin, who was a pedophile, an act that saw him rise from being an ordinary magistrate to a lord.
However, the book is unclear on some characters. We don't know so much about Galen's background. We only know that he is from the Land of the Princess, he has an uncle (who we also know nothing about) who wants him to inherit his business, but nothing more. Meldorath's background too is unclear. We are only introduced to him making a scene at Lord Orlin's castle. We also know he was a magistrate who later became a lord, but nothing more.
The book, apart from my criticism on the characters' backgrounds, was a great book. I also enjoyed the great plot, flow, suspense and tension, and wonderful themes such as war, pedophile, and power struggle among others. I don't see any reason not to give the book a 4 out of 4.
If you love action-packed novels with heavy fantasy, use of magic, and where there is political struggle, you will love this book too.
