After years of war, the Kingdom of Voulhire is reaching its splendour in some parts of the land. In others, however, suffering and despair reigns. But in a place where magic thrives, so does the mystery of one of the darkest and most powerful mages of all time. This is a journey to unveil the secrets that remain hidden in a world of wonder and suspense.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a thrilling story that understands the human vulnerabilities and strengths in each character. The way it narrates each of the intertwining stories in the Kingdom leaves the reader with the mission to discover more about this foreign land and when conflict arises, it sends a chill through the reader’s spirit persuading the reader to become addicted to the book. It elicits laughter, pain, understanding, and sorrow in the characters while maintaining a suspenseful air in between. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is so powerfully written because it handles sensitive actual topics and shares them in an empathic and careful way but also in a way that makes sense within the place and time of the story.
The only negative aspect that could be said about this book is that it leaves the reader with such suspense, and unless you possess the next volume of the book, the anguish left is unbearable. And even so, it is a joy to be left so captivated by a story. Other than that I can find no negative qualities in the book.
This book deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars, because of the story, the depth and the empathy that the reader can surely identify in the characters. Also because of the mastery of the intriguing storytelling and the humour that Matthew Tysz imbues to each character, there are several moments throughout the story that just makes you chuckle, and others that leave you with a feeling of sadness or shock.
The recommended audience would be teens to adults that rejoice in the fantastical new worlds. It does contain fictional violence, some of which can be shocking for a younger audience. It also includes some parts of veiled nudity and very little mild swearing. Readers that long a story of magic and mystery will surely be drawn to the marvellous Kingdom of Voulhire. I found this book perfectly well-edited, for I did not encounter a single error.
