Review by Faith Uche -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival u...
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the first book in We Are Voulhire series. It tells the story of a young man who escaped a life of war and hunger in the Lands of the Princes. The death of his uncle is responsible for such good fortune of his. Now he is in the kingdom of Voulhire and he must move on from the hopelessness of the past and embrace the dreams of tomorrow. This young man named Galen sets off for the city of Alcovia to get iron for the forge that once belonged to his uncle and that is now his. Accompanied by Rowan, his uncle’s executor, he goes to that city to search for lactis steel, but he finds something much more valuable. His curiosity for the nature of the subject of his discovery carries him to Yamon Soul where he finds a monk to help him figure this out. This discovery turns out to seal the three men’s fate together. Together, they will explore Voulhire and uncover secrets so dark that will make your heart skip several beats. Together, they will navigate and try to make sense of this kingdom filled with corrupt and power-hungry people.
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies can be likened to the beginning of a magic-filled movie. There is no great war or spectacular display of magic (save for the display of raw power by Lord Meldorath in the early parts of the book). True to the words of Matthew Tysz, its author, it only lays the foundation and development of characters whose presence will influence the events that will happen in subsequent books in the We Are Voulhire series.
One thing that I fell in love with is the way the author describes things in the story. He made sure to give much detail that the subject of his narration cannot help but materialize in the minds of his readers. One example is the way and manner in which he explained what lactis steel was and what made it so valuable. The author truly has a way with words.
Although this book has that Harry Potter vibe, it does not exactly fit the description. As much as I tried to hate some enemies of Voulhire, like Lord Meldorath or Riva Rohiva, I could not help but empathize with their course. I cannot say the same for Lord Voldemort of Harry Potter. This comes as a surprise to me and is a testament to the author’s ability to spin words to fit his purpose or goal. I had a good time reading about this book and would love to see the adventure that Galen Bray will venture into.
This book is a perfect work of art and I do not say this lightly. It is perfect in plot and editing. The author paid good attention to his book before publishing it. This act is worthy of commendation. On a scale of 4, with 1 being absolutely terrible and 4 being excellent, I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. As said before, this book is perfect in all its ways and it deserves a perfect rating. I think that fans of science fiction and books on magic will like this. Just be forewarned that there is a lot of ‘f-words’ and the like in it.
