Review by Sarahi Gold -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival ...
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies written by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the We are Voulhire series. The sons of the Emperor of Lullabies are at war with one another. 20 years have come and gone and the war does not look like it is slowing down. This 20 years of war means 20 years of suffering, hunger, and death for their subjects, but they do not care. It is on one of these lands that Galen was born. He would love nothing more than to hop on a ship and say goodbye to this place. It seems like the gods were listening to his prayer because Rowan, the executor of his late uncle’s estate waltzed into his hometown and told him that he has been named sole beneficiary to his uncle’s estate. This gives him an out and he grabs it with both hands. Now he is in Voulhire, he must figure out a way to fill the shoes that his uncle left behind by being the best blacksmith that Voulhire has ever known. Will he be able to succeed with all the enemies seeking to destroy the kingdom that he has grown to love?
This book seems to be just an introduction to what is to come. I say this because there was not much conflict in the book save for the time Lord Meldorath displayed how strong a mage he was when he went to arrest the former lord of Hillport. Even though there was no blood-pumping action after that, I still enjoyed reading the book a great deal. I found Rowan’s sense of humor interesting. It seems like he just spewed the most annoying and ridiculous things every time he opened his mouth to talk. His sarcastic words are another thing that I have fallen in love with. He is one character that I will like to see more of in the coming books.
Another important thing I noticed about the book is how brilliantly Matthew Tysz developed both the plot and the characters. Even though he did not give me enough information about Meldorath’s history and how he became the most feared mage in all of Voulhire, he did a swell job of shedding light on the kind of man that he is. He also did this for Galen. As a matter of fact, I can say that Galen is the man that I understood the most because by letting him narrate events from his perspective, his every feeling and most of his thoughts were laid bare before me.
The only thing that I was not too comfortable with is the profanities used by the characters. I am a little bit conservative when it comes to things like that. However, the plot captured my heart and mind so much that I caught myself not paying much attention to the plethora of curse words in the novel. This ability of the author to tell an interesting tale is one thing that I have grown to love about him. That said, I do not think that this book is appropriate for young readers below 15 years. Anyways, I found the book to be interesting enough, devoid of errors (it was edited professionally), suspense-filled, funny, and it has become a favorite of mine overnight. All of these qualities make me give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
In conclusion, if you love magic and fantasy novels, you may fall in love with this one. This book may not be packed with action, war, and death that is a characteristic of most books in the genre that this belongs to. However, it is rich in humor, suspense, and adventure. It is interesting enough to make you want to grab its sequel as soon as you are done reading it. Trust me on that.
