Review by Silvia Yusufu -- We are Voulhire: A New Arriva...
Galen Bray escapes his hometown, known as the Island of the Prince. This is a place that is constantly at war with its neighbors. A place that does not look like it's going to have peace anytime soon. His opportunity to leave such a horrible environment comes when Rowan, the executor in charge of his uncle’s estate hops on a ship in search of him. On getting to Voulhire, Galen sees this as an opportunity to start a new life for himself and he decides that he will not let his past get in his way. He must do all they can to be the perfect blacksmith and to grow the little fortune that his uncle left in his care.
In another part of the kingdom, some unscrupulous elements steadily scheme in the dark, making plans to bring about the fall of Voulhire. The host of Riva Rohavi, makes known his plans to take revenge on Voulhire for the past sins of their forefathers. This little militant group goes about destroying every single thing, people, animal, and city in their path. They are usually known as the dancing soldiers. And these dancing soldiers will dance until they build their mansions on the ashes of Voulhire.
Before I talk about the features, I want it to be known that I like every single thing in the book. From the very beginning to the end, I did not find anything worthy of dislike. Now that that’s said, the first feature that I particularly fell in love with is the writing style and the writing ability of the author. Matthew Tysz is gifted with a talent for creating worlds and making those worlds so real that they come alive in the minds of his readers. Of course, giving praises to such a talent cannot justify the work done in the book. So you will have to read it for yourself.
Another thing that made me like this book is the bits of humor infused here and there in the novel. One character with such a trait stood out to me and his name is Rowan. This witty man, who considers himself a ladies' man too beautiful to be rejected, goes out of his way to always make me laugh. His nonchalant attitude, sarcasm, and witty replies were great. Although all of these look like they mask a feeling of loneliness or shows he is yearning for something more, they all make this book worth reading. I cannot tell you how many times I burst into laughter after reading one of his exchanges with Demetrius or when he was explaining an event or giving Galen details of certain things that they came across. It is really beautiful.
A third thing that I cannot fail to mention is the suspense. Although this book does not have the action that I may have wanted it to, I forgive that because the suspense of the unknown and the possibilities made it all worth reading. Some of the questions that kept coming to my mind were: Who is Meldorath? Why does everyone fear him? What did he really do at Hillport that made him a condemned man? Why didn't kill King Wilheim deal with him as people expected him to? All of these questions, I believe are going to be answered in subsequent books in the series. All these unanswered questions did not make it any less interesting. In fact, these questions got me flipping the pages in search of answers.
That said, I would like to rate this book four out of four stars. Now I do this because honestly, as I said above, I couldn't find anything I did not like. Apart from the features mentioned above, what I did not say was that this book has not a single error in it. It blew my mind out of the water how an author can edit a novel to perfection. This is a feature that I have seen in some of the books that I have read authored by Matthew Tysz. He replicates such perfection in this novel. This is a testament to his willingness to present a book that is perfect in-toto. Again, I believe his book deserves all the stars that it got.
Lastly, I would like to recommend it to read readers who enjoy reading about adventure and fans of series like Harry Potter. Although you will find that our young protagonist, Galen, is no magician, he is a man of pure soul, just like Harry was. And maybe Meldorath may just be the Voldemort that he's waiting to encounter.
