Review by Carmen Howe -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival ...
This fantasy novel by Mathew Tysz takes place in a magical world where Galen, a young man from an island where a civil war has been going on for years, lives. He manages to escape on a boat to arrive at the prosperous Voulhire, a beautiful kingdom in its golden era. He wanted to get to this country because his great uncle had left his forge for him to work there. Galen will meet many welcoming people in the town he settles in, but his naivete will make him fail to realize the darkness lurking throughout the kingdom.
King Willhelm, the king of Voulhire, is well aware of the malicious forces scheming to seize control. Nevertheless, the people of Voulhire suspect that their ruler hasn't told them everything about Meldorath, a powerful mage who once had the king's favor and has been in the shadows for months.
To replace Meldorath, who had once been the lord of a small town called Hillport, Willhelm decides to send Eldus Alderman, one of his most trusted judges, to try and fix the damage done by the previous lords.
Eldus will settle into this poor town where he and his family will see for themselves the darkness left behind in the castle and the people of Hillport.
While he settles into his new home with the help of Rowan, a new friend that was also looking for him, Galen will learn more about his inherited forge to be able to follow in his great-uncle's footsteps.
My favorite thing about the We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is how every character seems to be so far away and unrelated from the rest at first, but later you realize how nearly all of them have things in common or find themselves connected later in the story. I like how the book describes the characters reasonably because the author doesn't give Galen any superpowers or innate talents only for being the main character.
It's also true for the rest of the characters, as the author gives each one of them a series of traits that make them imperfect and different from the rest, without making them have a single quality that they always have to embody.
I had some difficulty understanding some of the words Tysz used in some chapters, especially those that introduced new places and people since he used terms without explaining them or giving enough context.
Sometimes the text was confusing because some words or terms were new and the author hadn't mentioned them, but they were never important enough for it to bother me.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I love the writing style of the author and he doesn't spare any details while explaining how everything is happening. There wasn't a moment in the whole book where I didn't find myself enjoying every second of reading it.
It's an exceptionally well-written and edited novel and there's nothing I would change about it.
I recommend this fantasy book to any avid reader who likes lively action scenes and mystery. I think it's especially suitable for teens and young adults because it's short but entertaining at the same time.
