Review by Chantelle G -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of V...
In a world where magic, religion, and politics collide, there’s always something to be wary of. There are those who sense the darkness while others remain oblivious. The Riva Rohavi and the supposedly dead mage, Meldorath aren’t the only threats, either. It’s a complicated game, and it’s impossible to know who holds the upper hand.
Voulhire is changing in many ways. Progress is felt most in the city of Virko, whose ailing lord made it into what it is. Not everyone agrees with the changes, however, and there are powers, some evil, others benign, with their own agendas at work. But the citizens of Virko are not the only people facing the harsh reality of Voulhire’s evolution.
Galen, a young blacksmith is in need of iron to grow the business he inherited from his late uncle. Due to the events that devastated Hillport, that supply is no longer available. Now, together with his two friends, Rowan and Demetrius, he must find a new source to aid the city that took him in and saved him from a life in the Lands of the Princes. For that, he must go to Virko, but what he finds there is not what he bargained for.
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko follows the stories of several characters. Slowly, and with great expertise, Matthew Tysz is tying the ingenious world of Voulhire together through their experiences.
The magic, religion, and political affairs of this world are superbly detailed. It’s believable and intriguing. It’s difficult to know which side to be on because they’re all crafted so beautifully. The advancement of civilization is blended into the fantasy landscape with expert weaving so that the modern technologies fit seamlessly. I also love the characters, including those I hate. I’m just so enchanted by this world, and I can’t wait to discover more of it in the next book.
I love when a story makes me feel things, and this is one of those. I was on the edge of my seat for most of it, horrified by what else could and would go wrong. If it weren’t for the fact that I have to get work done during the day, I’d have read the whole thing in one sitting.
There honestly isn’t anything to complain about in this book, other than the fact that I’ve been left suspended in anticipation for what’s going to happen next.
I would give this book the rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Matthew Tysz is simply an expert when it comes to the craft of story building and character development. I thought the first book was good, but this one pulled me in even deeper. The lack of errors is the cherry on top of the cake. We are Voulhire is a phenomenal read.
I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone. Though there is a bit of profane language, it is done so in a way that fits with the characters that use such speech. However, because of this, and certain mature themes, I would recommend a more mature reader.
