We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantasy novel written by Matthew Tysz. As the title suggests, the novel is set in Voulhire – a prosperous and technologically advanced country. There are many interesting towns in this country. There is Soulhire, the prosperous capital of Voulhire which is of great historical and political significance. There is Magnum Caelum, a quaint little town where hardworking people go about their lives. There is also a small town called Hillport which is notorious for its last 2 lords – Lord Orlin and Lord Meldorath who committed numerous atrocities against their people. Would the people of Hillport ever be able to move on from their dark history and prosper?

The king of Voulhire, King Wilhelm, appoints a new lord to Hillport – Lord Eldus. Eldus is expected not only to help the people of Hillport move on but also lead them on the path to prosperity. Meanwhile, Magnum Caleum welcomes a new resident – Galen Bray. He is an ordinary young man who happily left behind his war-town hometown to take over the business of his late uncle. While trying to learn his uncle’s trade, he discovers a mysterious stone that might have magical properties. Would Lord Eldus prove to be a great lord? Would Galen discover the properties of that stone? Such questions keep us on our toes till the end of the book.

I really liked the book and would love to read the further instalments in this series. This book has an incredible storyline and knows how to keep its readers on the edge till the very end. It takes its time to introduce us to all the important characters and gradually show how they are all interrelated. Further, none of the characters are entirely good or entirely bad but have specific reasons for their actions. It allows readers to interpret things as they see fit and they can enjoy the book better.

There were only very few things about this book which I didn’t like. I feel that the author spent some time on the dialogues which added nothing to the plot. For example, the long dialogues between Rowan and Galen did not further the story. I was also a little disappointed by the abrupt ending of this book. I would have liked to know more about what is to come in the next part of this series.

I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as the author created a fascinating universe with an intriguing story to tell. I would recommend this book to people who love reading fantasy and science fiction novels. I will not recommend this book for children as it has few instances of offensive speech.
