We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first of the five books in the We are Voulhire series. Set in a new and strange world, the novel introduces readers to the world of Voulhire.

Galen Bray is a young man who escapes from the deplorable life in the Lands of the Princes to the land of Voulhire; an envisaged place of fulfilled dreams and freedom. There, he seeks to learn a new skill, making plans to live a settled and comfortable life in this land of wealth and development. However, every palace has its ghosts and Voulhire is no exception. Old wounds have been reopened and new ones are festering. Trouble is brewing in Voulhire, and suddenly, the future of this great land seems hazy and uncertain.

I find the world of Voulhire to be refreshing and intriguing. The prologue thrust me right into the story and had me hooked, seeking to know the next turn of events. This engagement is sustained throughout the book as each chapter has a suspenseful end. As an introductory book, it does well in acquainting readers with the characters, settings and conditions of this new world; the provision of a glossary proved helpful. Matthew Tysz gave a detailed description of each setting in the novel, such that I had a mental picture of the palace, streets and houses. The author's use and arrangement of words and expressions show professionalism. Mathew Tysz' fascination with the human nature is depicted in the well-developed characters he created. I am also fascinated by the engaging use of imagery employed by Matthew Tysz; I became a character in the novel, being able to see, feel and smell things vividly. The climatic end of the novel made me eager to read the next book in the series.

On the negative side, the novel has graphic scenes that are not to my taste. In addition to this, the constant switch between the 1st and 3rd person points of view was a tad disconcerting for me at the beginning.

This novel is well edited, I found no grammatical errors while reading. The negative aspects I mentioned earlier are my personal biases, they do not detract from the overall appeal of this novel. Thus, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

This novel contains graphic scenes, some vulgar words and sexual innuendos; so I do not recommend this book for anyone below the age of 18.

If you’re a lover of fantasy novels and you’re looking to start a new series, this novel will cater to your needs. Be prepared to read the other books in the series because the cliff-hanger at the end will make you thirst for more!
