Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire starts with the story of Galen who is fleeing his town, the land of princes. He goes to Voulhire to a town called Magnum Caelum. He considers himself lucky considering where he comes from. His hometown is full of death. From the moment he receives a letter from his estranged uncle, things have taken a turn for the better. His arrival in the new town has made him a wealthy man.
With the help of Rowan, his deceased uncle’s executor, he begins a journey to discover how to be a blacksmith. He gets to go places and learn how things are done. This is a hands-on experience where the inexperienced young man gets to see the world for what it is. Voulhire is big with various towns each unique for a given aspect. Galen learns to understand the true nature of people by watching and listening to what others say.
I did not like the way innocent people suffer while the wicked ones got away. But I guess where some people posses magical powers, it is expected some will suffer. This is an aspect that others may like and it did not affect the gripping story in any way.
I liked the way Matthew Tysz developed different characters. They depict truly the kind of people we have in society today. Lord Eldus, for instance, is a selfless leader who genuinely cares about the betterment of the town. Together with his family, they commit to doing all they can so that the people of Hillport may have better services. Lord Meldorath invokes fear in people. As much as they think he is dead, they still cannot call his name without fear of repercussions. Their fear of magic is clear here. The way Tysz crafts Caromentis, the realm of magic, is another aspect that will pull you in. This is a world which many desire to tap into and some people even kill for it. There is very little that these people would not do to get what they want. The author did a wonderful job with the book as the book is practically error- free. It seems to have been professionally edited and this made reading it quite easy. Because of this, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.
If you love magical fantasy, you will like this book. Here you will find mages who cast spells without having to lift a finger. I can recommend this book to teenagers and young adults. The book has a mild form of profanity and as such, not suitable for young children. This does not interfere with the reading at all. It lightens the mood of the book as they are also humorous.
