We are Voulhire: Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the We are Voulhire series, and it continues from where we left off in the previous book. The dive back into the Voulhire universe is just as magical and magnetic as it was upon reading the first book. In this addition to the series, the author immediately draws you in and reminds you why you have chosen to follow our protagonists once again. This exciting world comes alive on the page through words expertly crafted by Tysz.

In this book, we find Galen continuing his journey in this new land. Unable to source iron from Hillport after its destruction at the end of the previous book, Galen is searching for a supply of iron for the forge he inherited from his great-uncle. The city that offers a solution is Virko - a rich, industrial city but with a few problems of its own. Whilst making the unique transition from an aristocratic society to a democratic one, Virko seems to be plagued by a demon with an unexpected master. A dying Lord Hrelek strikes a deal with Galen, Rowan and Demetrius to supply them with iron in exchange for their assistance in ridding the city of this demon. However, this job proves to be more difficult than expected as the Lord’s son, Hans Hrelek, appears to be pulling a few key strings. Meanwhile, Yamon Soul may be in danger as Lord Meldorath formulates plans of attack.

In this book, the world of Voulhirian magic, mystery and intrigue continues to grow and expand. I like how we are exposed to more of this universe that Tysz has created, and all of the additional details are fascinating to discover. This book also explores the nuances of the main characters, and it enables the reader to understand each character’s personality and motivations much better. I particularly liked the depictions of extraordinary, and even terrifying, magic as it makes this book a wonderful piece of adventure, fantasy and escapism.

This book is almost faultless: there is nothing to dislike about it as a fan of this literary genre. One slightly confusing element of the book is the inclusion of advanced technology in a land that one would describe as medieval. However, in a land of magic such as this, it perhaps should not be surprising that some things would be modern and advanced.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars due to its exceptional creation and professional editing, as I was unable to find any errors. I would recommend this book to those that like fantasy and medieval genres. Readers that have finished the first book should be encouraged to continue with this series as it only improves. I would not recommend this book to younger readers as there is some profanity and sexual content.
