Review of Awakening
A young woman wakes to find she has no recollection of who, or where, she is. After stumbling through the cold, dark forest she awoke from, a name comes to mind that she believes is hers - Katja. Katja encounters a small kingdom, she later discovers as The Kingdom of Hale, where she meets a charming tavern keeper by the name of Marius. After Marius takes her in, she comes to discover that she may be the lost Princess Katja and that the Queen has a reward for her capture. She uncovers that Queen Amara is her sister and that her ruthless nature had designated her the nickname, Lady Snow. Fearful for her life, she goes into hiding at a small farm, raised by an elderly couple, Dakkart and Solange. For the following few weeks, she is content living the simple life of a farm girl and adopting the elderly couple as her family. After three ghastly encounters with a group of bandits, and a horrific night she will never forget, she comes to know her true identity. During the tale of how Katja comes to know her past, it takes you back to unfold the events that led up to her amnesia. Now she has to decide to learn from her past mistakes or feed into the darkness that consumed her before.
Awakening is the story of how our past doesn’t have to define us, instead, we can allow it to guide us to a better outcome. The story Tayma Tameem illustrates is one of how important family is, and how they can alter our path. Amara and Katja were inseparable, and each saw the other as their foundation. Throughout the backstory, they continuously lean on each other to stay grounded and draw from each other for strength. The movement of the story allows you to see things as they happen along with the character, but still gives you a slight edge of having pieces of her backstory.
The way the ending is laid out, you only obtain some answers to the questions you gain throughout the story. It ends so abruptly after discovering the character’s true identity, you’re left with questions of what she does with her newfound revelation. If the author intended to leave the story open to allow for a sequel, then the ending makes sense.
I rate this book four out of four stars. I believe this story deserves four stars because of the captivating tale that is told. Tayma Tameem was able to take the reader through the story, along with the character. I was able to feel the same emotions as the character - anger, fear, frustration, and love. The book was beautifully written, and I feel as though a three star rating wouldn’t do this book justice.
The recommended audience would be readers who love science-fiction, fantasy, or books with a good storyline. This book does contain a few graphic war scenes, so it wouldn’t be advised for someone under the age of 16. Although it seems to be set in Medieval times, the dialogue is set to present day.
