Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Galen, by some wild stroke of luck, discovers that he is to inherit a house, a smith shop, and some money from a relative that lives many miles away from his country. He sees this as his opportunity to disappear from his so-called home that has brought nothing but pain, suffering, war, and death to him and his kinsmen. His new home is in Magnum Caelum in the kingdom of Voulhire. He leaves his new home with Rowan, his uncle’s executor, for the mining town of Alcovia in search of white steel. He plans on forging weapons and armor that have never before been made in Magnum Caelum. As ambitious as his dreams are, he plans on making good of his plans in this country that has given him a chance to live again.
Even though Voulhire may appear to be a cozy country whose people enjoy the peace and the covering of their king, some scheme in the dark for the destruction of this country. They crave power, control, and worship from the people and they will do all that they can to get it. Although the people of Voulhire are vaguely aware of these plans, they cannot say for sure if they will consume them whole and make Voulhire a mirror of the land that Galen fled from.
The first positive feature I noted in We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz (which happens to be my favorite) the easy pace at which Matthew Tysz developed the plot of the story. The story opens up with a bang. It showed firsthand the awesome display of the magical powers of Lord Meldorath. Slowly, the tentacles spread to other parts of Voulhire and focused on key characters that set kept the wheel of the whole story greased and moving seamlessly. Foreshadowing and bouts of mini flashbacks were also employed in telling the story.
There is also a lot of imagery and humor in the story. The language used was simple at some points and flowery at others. The way it was told was simply beautiful. Also, even though the characters occasionally used profane words to express themselves and their thoughts, it is comforting (for me) to note that there were not many. That is another thing that I liked about the book. I am particularly grateful for this because I have never been a fan of expletives and have always been uncomfortable with reading or hearing them. I know that it was in the habit of characters that used such words to use them. But they did not use it so much that it became overbearing for me. I thank Matthew Tysz for this. I dare say that he was considerate of people who may not appreciate cussing.
The feature that I liked least in the story is the fact that no female character was focused on or got the opportunity of playing a key role in the story. Apart from Beth of Caromentis who was mentioned in just a fraction of the story, there was a lack of a female character that played a key or strong role in the story. No woman was made the center of attention like Galen, Meldorath, or King Wilhelm, in the whole book. I wish that this was not the case. I only hope that this will not be a norm in the rest of the books in the We Are Voulhire series.
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a book that entertains and intrigues. I had a nice time reading this story and cannot wait to continue where this book ended in the next. I also liked that in all the pages of the story, there is not one error. It was exceptionally and wonderfully edited. However, I wished that there was a key and strong female character in the book. I wished that Beth, the only female character to play a significant role in the story, was given more space in the pages of the book. The whole story is perfect save for that ‘flaw’ that I wish was not there at all. So I rate We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars.
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a fantasy fiction story. It also has a bit of science in it. So I am convinced that even though it will appeal heavily to fantasy fiction fans, invention and current science innovation lovers may like this book because of the progressive things that were invented and made appearances in the story.
