Review of Fish Wielder
Fish Wielder by Jim Hardison is a fun-loving, comical and a very wholesome book. It resonates with some of the great fantasies like The Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia etc. But the biggest difference that sets Fish Wielder apart from all these novels is the light, funny tone that it upholds throughout. It's a story of Thoral Mighty fist who is known as "Fist Wielder" of Grome. He dresses like a pirate and is very charming, muscular and has chiseled features. This is his journey from being the "Fist Wielder" to the "Fish Wielder" and beyond.
The plot is very catchy. It revolves around Thoral's mission to prevent The Heartless One who leads Bad Religion from eating the "Pudding of Power", and getting all the enormous, magical strength anyone in Grome possibly can. He is accompanied by his fellowship in which his main sidekick is Brad who is an adorable Koi fish and includes Elfrod's Elf army along with his magnificent, beautiful daughter, Nalweegie who is head over heels in love with our mighty hero, Thoral. We come across all these ridiculous turns of events which one really cannot see coming. They make no sense yet make so much sense, which makes this novel so lighthearted and joyful!
The relaxed, cheerful and exciting tones of this book are what I like the most about it. You cannot really reason with what's happening or give logic for it because Fish Wielder is such a random set of events in motion that they really end up surprising you, which I found amusing. The next thing I really like is how merry and delightful all the characters are, yet they have so much character depth and history. Since it resonates with other fantasies, you end up nostalgic, which gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling. The ridiculous names of people and places like Tofu, Futon, etc. are humorous and fascinating. Jim Hardison has made sure to pack this book with action which is entertaining. He also has a great comic timing, especially when the setting is serious, and he just makes one of the characters say one of the funniest things.
There's nothing that I dislike about this book. It's comedic, has depth and a great, hilarious plot. It has a vibrant setting.
I'm giving this book four out of four stars. I found it well-edited. I have no complaints. There is originality in some scenes even if not all of them and an element that only this book carries.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy funny, silly and entertaining books. This book has really low graphic content and can be read to children above 10 too. If you want something wholesome and lighthearted, go for this book.
