Welcome to Deep Cove by Grant Reed is a fiction novel that is also a little bit sci-fi or fantasy as well. It centers around a man, Garrett, and his friend Merle who is a mini dragon. They live in a town called Deep Cove and the novel tells a tale of their adventures working for a man named Mr. Kline, a businessman and gangster, and the friends they meet along the way.
The prologue describes a secret military attack that goes wrong, which comes into play much later in the book and becomes a major part of the story line. The main story starts with Garrett earning his private investigator’s license, finally, after a much too long wait. He and his friend and partner Merle have been behind on their bills so they are forced to take odd jobs here and there, but their landlord, Mr. Kline, happens to be a gangster who is demanding rent. Garrett is forced to work for him to even up his debts and gets himself, and his partner, caught up in a whirlwind of mystery. While working for this man, they end up making friends with some of Mr. Kline’s other employees (who happen to include minotaurs and an ogre) and everyone gets involved in unraveling a mysterious plot of mayhem, deceit, and secrets unraveled.
I really enjoyed this book, much more than I thought I would. I found it hard to get into the story at first, but the characters soon grew on me, and the plot is full of twists and turns that come together eventually and give the reader that “aha!” moment. There are quite a few characters in this novel, and they all have been written with unique histories and personalities, which is refreshing. I was thrilled with the fact that I didn’t see the plot twists coming until they actually happened; sometimes it’s really easy to predict the way a novel will go with its storyline but that was not at all the case with this book.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that I did have a difficult time getting into the story. I felt that for about half of the book there were numerous plot lines that were not at all related to one another and there would never be a point or a climax to this story, but as I stated above that was not the case in the end. There were also a few typos, but for the most part that was minor. I personally had a difficult time with the geography of the story, since there were so many places referenced, but I just went with it.
I would give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I thought it was a great novel that was very unpredictable, and I feel that people who like fantasy would enjoy it as well as people who have never been into that genre of books, like me. I advise anyone who reads it to stick with it if they think it’s slow moving, because they will be rewarded with a great story. The only reason I don’t give the book 4 stars is because I feel it could use another edit to get rid of the mistakes. A great book overall!
