Awakening by Tayma Tameem explores the world of the unknown; the realm of supernatural powers beyond human comprehension. A girl with no recollection of her life waked up in the middle of a forest. She ventures out to the new world, full of uncertainties, to bring back the memories of her lost past and identifying herself. Her journey brought her to Marius, a tavern keeper, who became a trusted friend and ally; and a farm couple named Dakkart and Solagne, who have been a pseudo family to her. These three individuals allowed her to unleash the person within her as she moves forward fighting the evils lurking in the shadows and rediscovering her life. Will she get her memories back?

Read Awakening: Book 1 to find out!

The subject of the novel is something that is well familiar to us and has been used time and again. The battle of good and evil, familial love, and power struggles. Nevertheless, the book is trying to bring out something new through dissecting our common understanding of these concepts. This approach allowed the author to establish a good base for the book and probably the focal of the entire series. There were no major highs and lows for the introductory book, but the manner in which the story unfolds and communicated is such an interest that created a thrill of its own.

Though the novel is very captivating, I have noted some concerns on its structure. First, the characterization of the minor characters was left on its own. It was not properly built up to support the subsequent events that transpired in the novel. And second, the flow at the latter part of the novel somewhat created confusion in understanding the timing of occurrence. Rather than establishing the ‘present’ from a certain part of the story, the novel kept its way of re-telling the past in selected chapters.

Notwithstanding the abovementioned deficiencies, I still find this novel great and well crafted. Though there were errors in grammar noted, it is of minimal consequence and still showed that the book has ben carefully reviewed and proofread. Overall, I give this book a four out of four stars.

I highly recommend this book to teens, young adults, fantasy lover and probably anyone, who’ll like to lost themselves in the world of magic, adventure, and limitless imagination.
