Review of Growth
Growth by Jon Pulli tells a story of how a drink called Lifio, which was engineered to cause genetic mutations in human DNA, changed the world. At first, its effects seemed to be overwhelmingly positive. The drink caused quicker cell regeneration which resulted in the extension of human lifespan and made many diseases disappear. However, everything comes at a price. The human population started to face another deadly issue - uninhibited growth. The only people who were worried about this phenomenon were a group of scientists. They must find a way to reverse the mutation before humanity dies of starvation, but time is running out as countries spiral into chaos.
The plot and character creation in the book were amazing. I enjoyed the fact that the story was told from the perspectives of people from different backgrounds. We followed Michael and Ana who were just normal people starting their adult lives and trying to survive in the rapidly changing world. They climbed the social ladder to slowly gain status they had never dreamed of. We could also observe a group of scientists who were trying to reverse the effects of the mutation and the Stallsons who achieved enormous success through producing and selling Lifio. Stories of the characters seemed a bit disconnected at first. However, throughout the book, their fates started to intertwine and the protagonists from different backgrounds started to interact with each other.
I also enjoyed how the book touched upon many different themes. It focused on the exploration of social changes that followed the release of Lifio on the market. It showcased how thoughtlessness and the need for instant gratification can lead people to ruin. It touched upon the problem of overpopulation and its detrimental effect to the world's economy. In addition to this, the story showed how scientific discoveries that aren't fully tested and understood could do more harm than good. The book also portrayed a very realistic depiction of the ruthless world of business and politics. It dived deeply into the problems faced by different countries, as well as showed the struggles of individuals.
The only thing that I didn’t like immediately was the ending. It seemed abrupt and left me a bit confused at first. It took me a second to fully understand the implications of the last scene. I came to like that it was a bit cryptic and made the reader wonder. I feel like the best way to describe the ending is to call it bittersweet.
I greatly enjoyed every part of the book, from the amazing plot to the realistic and interesting characters. The story was engrossing, touched upon important themes, and was exceptionally well-edited. That is why I gladly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy dystopian science fiction stories. However, there are some disturbing and explicit elements so it’s not suited for a younger audience. Overall, this novel is certainly unique and will satisfy even the most demanding readers.
