A refugee from the lands where death is either by sword or slow starvation boards a ship. Unaware that fate is at work, Galen Bray manages to escape his war-torn homeland. On the voyage, he listens to stories about his destination, the magnificent kingdom of Voulhire, and is glad to be heading towards a better life. What turn of events will this predestined entry under the great skies of Voulhire bring?

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz captures the essentials of a perfect fantasy story. The author brings to life a fascinating mystical world, Voulhire, where the earthly and supernatural forces concur. Ruled by an exceptional king, Voulhire is stepping into its golden phase. It offers distinct opportunities to different cities of the land.

The story starts with the theme of gratitude and hope on Galen's part when he sets out on his journey to Magnum Caelum but is soon infused with elements of political drama, love, magic, and mystery.

I liked the freshness of the idea of placing a relatable and ordinary hero in a fantasy storyline-one who mirrors the emotions and thoughts of a layman. I reckon Galen's role will be substantive to the series and, we'll see his character unroll and evolve in the upcoming parts.

Brownie points to the author for bringing forth the antagonist's story along with that of the protagonist. I loved the character build-up for Meldorath and how we get to know his side of the story almost at the end. The map enclosed at the start makes it convenient to keep track of places and picturise the story.

This coming-of-age story is character-driven, charismatic, and highly original. Tysz's ability to describe the wonders of Voulhire with his words leaves the reader awestruck. The style of writing is layered, magniloquent, and spellbinding. Masterfully set conflicts and plot twists make the story fast-paced and exquisite. One realizes while reading that every situation and character is put into play for a reason. I found myself completely enchanted by the storyline and read the book in one sitting! I also loved the effortlessness with which the story unfolded.

The book is exceptionally well-edited and leaves no room for complaint. The first leg of the Voulhire saga truly deserves all 4 out of 4 stars. As a bibliophile, I look forward to reading the rest of the parts of the lineup.

The book is recommended to anyone who would like a taste of magic and thrill in their reading routine.
