Review of Fish Wielder
Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a fantasy novel that will take you on an unforgettable and extremely hilarious adventure. Our hero is Thoral Mighty Fist, the most fearsome warrior in Grome. Along with his faithful sidekick Brad, a talking fish, they roam this vast mystical world in search of adventures to fund their drinking habits. That is until Thoral gets more than he bargained for when he rescues an elfish princess from a dreadful sorcerer. Her father, King Elfrod, sends Thoral on a mission to stop the Bad Religion from using the Great Pudding of Power. This mission takes him on a journey filled with insightful revelations, action-packed fights, and fascinating magical characters, both good and evil.
This heroic story was inspired by the works of legendary authors such as Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. With this in mind, I was expecting the humor to be on point. I also anticipated exquisite world-building along with a daring but somewhat ridiculous plot. I was not disappointed. Hardison proved to be a master storyteller by filling my reading experience with an abundance of laughter and surprising moments I won’t soon forget.
Apart from the brilliant use of humor, the writing quality was superb. Every detail the author incorporated into his character and plot development made me appreciate this novel even more. Each character had a distinctive voice with unique quirks that made them memorable. For instance, Thoral can never identify the specific word he wants to use in a situation. He always describes the word perfectly to Brad, who then pinpoints the correct word. Character interactions like this provided some light-hearted entertainment while also making the dialogue feel natural and smooth. Furthermore, Hardison masterfully incorporated brilliant plot twists along the way, never allowing a dull moment to hinder the fast-paced narrative.
I have to make it clear that the author takes liberties with the tropes you would expect of the genre. However, readers will have fun identifying different elements and tropes incorporated from other fan favorites such as Narnia, The Wizard of Oz, and The Lord of the Rings. Readers who enjoy fantasy novels should definitely give this book a read. However, if you don’t enjoy seeing your favorite tropes with a comical twist along with a ridiculous plot and silly characters, this might not be the book for you.
There was nothing I didn't enjoy about this delightful story. It ends with a cliff-hanger, making me hopeful for more fun-filled installments set in this epic mystical world. With so much to love and appreciate about this well-written book, I rate Fish Wielder 4 out of 4 stars. I only managed to find three errors in the entire book, which proves that the text was professionally edited. In conclusion, I had a blast reading this novel, and I urge readers to give it a try.
