Santa Clause, Christmas, and everything associated with this topic look like a winter fairy-tale: kind, friendly, and peaceful. But in David Jordan’s book “The Elf Coup” the situation on the North Pole is endangered. Mistletoe Green, an ambitious elf, decided to change the status quo and take everything under his control. He realizes that he cannot replace Santa Claus completely, but he wants to demote him and prepares a coup. Noel Night, a brave and devoted to freedom elf, has been chosen to confront Mistletoe Green and disrupt his evil plans. The readers will travel from hot and dry desert to the snowy, frosty and blizzardly North Pole; from the deep rocky chase with streaks of gold and embedded pressure stones to the tropical humid climate of the training area. They will observe how hard training could be, but understand that the obtained skills are essential to fight the nemesis.
The book is inspirational and encouraging to be strong, not to fear obstacles, but stand up to tyrany and overcome it. The author masterfully maintains readers’ interest and describes elves’ life from different angles: work, breakfast and lunch times, meetings, travelling to the human world. Magic and everyday life are interrelated in the “Elf Coup” book by David Jordan and appear natural and meaningful. Friendly relationships between elves, their support of each other, desire to work together and good faith in their Mission make me think that our world could be better if more people believed in fantasy and its positive influence on our life. Another positive aspect is technological advances at the North Pole. Santa Claus and his realm do not fall behind, they are eternal and belong to the 21st century.
I did not find any significant negative aspects in this book. The language is good, suitable for a wide audience. I haven’t found any profane words or phrases. Typos and mistakes were few. There are only two mistakes related to the names. The first one is on page 137: “Please…” Evergreen whispered darting a look at Nurse Chestnut.” But Nurse Chestnut has left after physical examination was completed. She took the glowbulbs and disappeared, and Evergreen was left with the doctor Angel Song. The second one is on page 262: “Winter Light” is “Zimniy Svet” in Russian, the first noun turns into the adjective “Zimniy”.
I think, David Jordan’s book “The Elf Coup” deserves 4 stars out of 4. It reminds me Harry Porter’s books which I frequently read and enjoy. Now I was lucky to discover a similar book and I look forward to reading the other novels of “Magi Charter” series.
The book is intended for schoolchildren, teenagers, young adults and all adults who love fantasy books.
