Review of Antipodium
Antipodium by Frasar is a book about the adventures of a man only known as Francis. It is the second book in a series detailing his life. It is a biography written from the diary of Francis. The book is divided into four parts, The Prologue, The European Years, The Australian Years, and The New Zealand Years. The book deals with his various adventures such as traveling across Europe with his wife, working as a geologist explorer in Australia, and as an engineer in New Zealand. The book delves into relationships he makes along the way and the various scrapes he gets into.
I liked how adventurous the protagonist was. He was always willing to try new things. This is shown when he declines a lucrative offer given to him by his Australian company and instead decides to give up his job and try something new. I was inspired by his bravery as it is not common to find people willing to give up comfort to get new experiences. As a result of his bravery, he was able to experience incredible things such as working in the Australian Outback, Tasmania, and so on.
His instincts were also very impressive. The way he listened to them saved his life on various occasions, such as when a bush fire was occurring. He managed to save his family thanks to his instincts. His encounter with a wild animal in the California hills is another such instance. I enjoyed looking at the pictures that were included. The story itself sounds fantastical so the inclusion of pictures anchored it in reality. I enjoyed how they depicted a bygone era, as they showed a lot of wildland. The pictures showed nature in all its beauty. It also helped lend some credibility to the story. Not many people go through as many adventures as the protagonist has. This might make some of the stories hard to believe.
However, I did not like how reckless the protagonist sometimes was. This is shown in the prologue when he follows a strange man in Jerusalem, nearly leading to his death. He, together with his wife, almost died due to his recklessness while he was driving. This led to me being anxious at various points in the book as he landed himself in various predicaments.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I will look up the others in the series. The book seems to be professionally edited as I found very few errors. I would highly recommend this book to people who like adventure stories and historical stories. This book gives both through the lens of the protagonist. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it was entertaining.
