“Red Energy” by James M. Corkill is a fantastic book combining the elements of a good thriller and science fiction story into one fabulously interwoven adventure. I look forward to reading more of the Alex Cave books written by Corkill.

“Red Energy” follows Alex Cave, a geophysicist as he aids in the recovery of some advanced “alien” technology from a remote island. Once the technology has been recovered it is then stolen and a scientist is kidnapped, leaving Alex Cave with no choice but to try and save the day. There is also another minor subplot that is mentioned in the beginning but doesn’t really come into play until later. That being that there are some Russians looking to seek revenge on Alex by killing off the members of his family. Alex is forced to confront the many disasters head on and do his best to save his family- and the world.

The plot in this book is very engaging. The reader is kept on the edge of their seat as events unfold, wondering whether or not Alex will be able to put a stop to things or not. This book is chock full of action, both in the form of thriller type action and science fiction type action. Alex faces challenges involving both advanced technology and heinous villains.

The characters in this book are all very dynamic. Alex Cave especially is a fantastic main character. Each of the characters seem realistic, regardless of whether they are a hero or villain, and it was easy to relate to each of the characters. Cave especially was a marvelous character. He displayed all of the emotions that one would expect from a real life hero and acted in a manner that displayed courage, while still being realistic. I would definitely be interested in reading more about Alex Cave as he was a very interesting character. I am curious, as this was the third book in the series, to see what Cave was like during the first two books and to see what events shaped him into the character that he was in this book.

Corkill, while presenting some awkward dialogue at times, definitely understands how to write an engaging thriller/science fiction story. Corkill kept me glued to the pages, unable to stop reading until I had finished the story, and even then left me wanting more. The descriptions of the action scenes and natural disasters are described in detail, without being overbearing. It was easy to imagine the scenes in my head, while still having enough room to imagine some of the finer details myself. The only fault that I found with the author’s writing was that some of the dialogue seemed awkward and forced. There were times when it was obvious that what I was reading was actually a book as the dialogue didn’t read fluidly or as if the characters were actually speaking. Although some of the dialogue was awkward, it didn’t detract too much from the overall story. I still found myself enjoying reading the conversations between the characters and seeing how their relationships would develop.

I would give this book 3 out of 4 stars. “Red Energy” was a fabulous blend of a thriller and a science fiction book that kept me glued to the pages until the very end. The only fault that I found with the book was the sometimes awkward dialogue between the characters, beyond that the book was amazing. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in thrillers, especially thrillers with a science fiction twist. This would also be a fabulous book for anyone interested in getting into the genre of science fiction as the science fiction elements in this story were realistic and believable, making this book a great intro to the genre.
