Al Kunooz in Heirdom by Tayma Tameem is comprised of three kingdoms: the Kingdom of Tranquillium, the Kingdom of Intellectus and the Kingdom of Valoria. After a betrayal caused a devastating war to break out among two of the kingdoms, the Kingdoms of Valoria and Intellectus devise a treaty to form an alliance and establish peace. The treaty declares that the princes and the princesses of Valoria and Intellectus shall marry. The eldest son of Valoria, prince Zain is to marry the eldest daughter of Intellectus, Princess Amber, while the story follows the perspective of princess Zeina of Valoria, the next eldest, who is betrothed to the second eldest of Intellectus, prince Adam. The weddings that were thought to be three years out are unexpectedly (to some)moved up, and so the royal family of Intellectus arrives in Valoria to prepare for prince Zain and princess Amber's wedding. Because Princess Zeina is stubborn and rebellious and Prince Adam is reserved and head strong, the two end up butting heads more often than not; however, neither intends to end their engagement, as they are both duty-bound. Zeina is also sure that there is something else that she's missing, something that could shatter their vision of peace, but she can't quite tell yet who or what it may be. Meanwhile, the kings and queens try to hurry the marriages along, in an attempt to prevent another war, but will they be successful?

I feel that the author did a very good job of developing the characters, as well as the story line. As the story progresses, you learn enough about the past to understand the current state of affairs, without giving it all away in the beginning. This makes the story very compelling. Another positive aspect of this book is its strong female leads. They are intelligent, powerful and fearless warriors, which I find much more inspiring to young girls than the typical damsel in distress narrative.

The one negative aspect of the book for me was that a few times, the very similar/same names made it difficult to follow the story. Once of twice I think this even tripped up the author.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because the story was so well-developed and compelling that I didn't want to stop reading it. For me, there weren't many memorable lulls throughout the story, which is quite rare. It keeps you guessing and "on the edge of your seat."

This is a great read for those who enjoy fantastical history with strong female leads or for anyone who can get down with young adult fiction. The story was quite pg and would be suitable for almost all age groups.
