Review of Fish Wielder
Thoral, the mighty fist wielder, is a strong, brawny barbarian in the land of Grome, who has violet eyes and speaks with a strange accent. No one knows much about him, not even his friend and companion of many years, Brad, the koi fish. Together, Thoral and Brad go on many adventures in the land of Grome. One day, they reach the house of an evil necromancer, defeat him, and rescue Nalweegie, the elfish princess.
Once they get informed about an evil master trying to kill Thoral, and planning to kill the elves, Thoral and Brad proceed to find this individual. To stop him and save the land of Grome from destruction, they have to go on a dangerous quest. On this quest, they are accompanied by the king of the elves, the princess, and a special elite force from the elves. They encounter many obstacles, many near-death experiences, and Thoral gets a big surprise.
At first, I was not sure about this book because of the title, but I am glad I read it. Written by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison, Fish Wielder is highly reminiscent of some other fantasy stories, especially in the plot and the names of the characters. This might sound like a bad thing, but in this case, it worked because of the humorous vibe of the entire book. For instance, the evil master who was long dead was Mauron and the king of the elves was Elfrod. Instead of an evil ring, there was an evil bracelet and there was a crystal orb that could take over a person's mind. There were many more correlations like these, some of which made me roll my eyes, but most of them just made me laugh.
There were many things I liked about this book. I liked the character of Thoral. He was gruff and tough on the surface, but soft and sensitive on the inside. He was ruthless with his enemies but sweet to his friend and horse. I also liked how strong female characters were portrayed in the book. Even the elf princess who had to be rescued was tough and could handle herself in combat. The fish was quick-witted. He could not fight, but was the smartest of them all. I liked how the ending was not predictable, though I had hoped for a different ending. The editing was amazing. There was not one error in the entire book, and this made it easy to read.
There was nothing I disliked about the book. For the reasons mentioned above, I am glad to give Fish Wielder four out of four stars.
I recommend this book to lovers of fantasy. If you enjoy Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia, you will definitely enjoy reading it. If you simply want a fun read, different from the usual, serious type of book, then I recommend this book to you. There are graphic descriptions of violence, so those who do not like this may stay away.
