“In Voulhire, everyone thinks they will live forever. So, they live for tomorrow.” This saying motivates the people of Voulhire and is in part responsible for the period of wealth, technological advancement, and prosperity that the city experienced. The people of Voulhire were struggling to come to terms with the death of Mayor Orlin and Meldorath the Mage while trying to distance themselves from the Riva Rohavi. Driven into hiding, the Riva took refuge in the underground caverns with springs and passageways beneath Odaiamar. There they remained unnoticed by the rest of Voulhire while creating chaos among the citizens.

Voulhire is the reflection of the vivid imagination of the author, Matthew Tysz. Mr. Tysz created the reality of Voulhire and Caromentis along with the splendor of their people and way of life. The story depicts cities populated by humans with varying magical abilities where murder by magic and deceit are predominant among the elite. The same elite who lived in constant fear of the Riva. A citizenry who appears unaware of the secret guarded by Captain Barcaedi and his battalion of mages at Lorcia’s Isle. A secret kept by a few. A secret that would cause the people of Voulhire to lose faith in their king Wilhelm. Ultimately, a decision that cost Voulhire the entire city of Hillport.

To the citizens of Voulhire, the world of Caromentis is a fairytale and depicted as a world between worlds. Those who traverse these planes are said to become kings. The dark conspiracy unfolds when a stranger arrives in Voulhire from Caromentis through a portal. Before the resurrection of Meldorath and the death of Lord Eldus and his family. The story provides a refreshing outlook on war and magic.

The author created one of the most enigmatic stories in We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies. This book is as unique as it is brilliant. It has a strong storyline and various persons of interest who play a vital role in the further development of the story. This society and architecture seem to be a clever mixture of Medieval and Victorian times. With aspects of the clothing and language being more modern. Overall the creation of the storyline contained various elements from different eras, from gas lamps, wooden ships, and rubber-lined boots to licensed prostitution. This combination and the well-developed reference guide give credence to the originality of this piece of work.

The story begins with a coup d'état at Castle Hillport where an unseen force murdered and created mayhem among the soldiers and residents of the Castle. Unseen the elusive killer struck with powerful magic and sheer brutality killing everyone in their path. During this onslaught, the mayor of Hillport was accused of “undisclosed perversions” and murdered in a strategic attempt by Meldorath to advance himself. Ironically, he was taken prisoner by soldiers of magic commanded by a mage acting on behalf of the king.

The values of Voulhire seemed futuristic in that focus is placed on morality and the wisdom of the old guiding the young. To break this is considered an act against society and is punishable by law. Everyone is held accountable even judges have to recite “the Oath of Justice” before presiding over cases.

This book is an unapologetic piece of original work. The extensive reference guide clearly shows that this work has been long in the making. The author’s style is exquisite. He managed to draw the reader in from the start and remained consistent with the storyline. The book maintained its consistent pace while exploring the nefarious lives of some of the main characters.

I liked everything about this book and the characters. The only negative is I believe the name of the book is a bit misleading. “New Arrival Under Great Skies” creates the perception of an alien-type storyline with Caromentis described as another cosmos. However, the storyline mentions different planes of existence connected to the tree of knowledge and its branches or paths. The tree coupled with individual personalities helps shape the type of magic that each person develops. Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a surprise within itself, and I believe readers of all ages will enjoy this book.

Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of its brilliance, the original architecture, and the mishmash of modern elements intertwined with historical details. This body of work will be an absolute treat for lovers of fantasy novels.
