Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Voulhire is a dream come true for Galen Bray. After 28 years of hardship in the Lands of the Princes, plagued by poverty and endless wars, he received a letter from his alienated uncle, who had gone to great lengths to find him and secure his escape.
Two and a half weeks after boarding a leaking ship, Galen arrived at the shores of Magnum Caelum in the kingdom of Voulhire, where everything seemed remarkably different from what he had known in the land he had escaped. Here, "there were underground rivers!" And "houses in Magnum Caelum were situated over these underground rivers." Also, it was stupid to knock at the door of an inn, and a room full of laughter was commonplace. He was bewildered by these beautiful, enchanting disparities. Now the inheritor of his uncle's estate, Galen was naïve yet eager to explore the beauty surrounding this rich and glamorous kingdom.
But Underneath the surface was a kingdom at the brink of chaos. In Soulhire, Voulhire's capital, the game of politics is getting more brutal by the day; "Drama that could satisfy any gossiper for life. Thieving, prostituting, spying. Science and the magic. And the money." Northwest, in the Graylands, a community of anarchists known as Riva Rohavi gingerly awaits a chance to wreak havoc on the dawn of Voulhire's golden era. And just south of the capital, Lorcia's Isle — guarded by a fleet of ships — imprisons Meldorath, the most dreaded Mage in all of Voulhire, who is hatching a grand magical display of mayhem.
Matthew Tysz delivers an evocative epic fiction with We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies. His writing style is as enchanting as the beauty of Voulhire. It lures us into a relaxing and enjoyable read, as the impressive description of this fictional world with its politics and magic unfolds an exciting sociopolitical saga. His use of both first-person and third-person points of view is noteworthy, as it is a unique way to enhance the narration of each part of the story.
This epic novel will not keep me at the edge of my seat, but it will come in handy if I'm on a beach in the Caribbean, sunbathing next to a glass of piña colada. I have zero negative comments. This book is lulling yet compelling. Matthew does a great job with this first instalment, laying the foundation for the rest of the series and creating a strong appetite for what comes next. His wording is perfectly edited, and his plot is enjoyable. Hence, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
Fans of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire should add this to their reading list. Lovers of epic novels with magic like The Lord of the Rings would enjoy this novel. As an easy and enjoyable read, it would make for an exquisite holiday reading list. But it is more suitable for adult readers and requires discretion.
