A kid’s childhood can be summarized in four simple words: food, games, sleep and gifts. Gifts to a child are the most important things. To them, this expresses how much you love them. That the big man in red comes around every Christmas Eve is a good enough incentive for a child to be a well-behaved angel. It is a horrific for a child to be on a naughty list and get coal in their stockings. I have not had the heart to tell my girls that Santa Claus is not real. I cannot bear to make them stop the yearly ritual of milk and cookie. They are rather excellent bakers and I have been swiping the snacks for the past ten years to stop now!

However, in Jordan David’s The Elf Coup, Santa Claus is a real being and in his command are elves who are ready to make each year’s Mission a success. Papa Nicholas comes from a line of Santa Claus who strive to keep the North Pole complex working and in top condition. In his absence to the human world, Mistletoe Green, a power-hungry elf, seeks to topple the Santa Claus administration and takes power for himself. He wants to turn the beloved Santa Claus into a mere delivery guy. Mistletoe creates the FCD, alienating other elves of the workforce. This causes animosity in the North Pole. To make matters worse, a deadly creature arrives at the North Pole, hence delaying the Mission. To help mitigate the problems of the North Pole, the Wise Council enlists the help of Noel Night, a historian elf. Does Noel succeed in his endeavors or does Mistletoe’s coup destroy the North Pole from within?

The Elf Coup brought out the inner child in me with the mention of magic and ancient runes. I loved the way Jordan David merges the wonders of magic, existence of elves in the North Pole with the modernity of the human world. He gives the North Pole a touch of technology that millennial can easily relate to. The author employs a technique which involves switching points of view from one character to another, from one place to a different place entirely and from one fortunate situation to a different direr situation. The book is also highly descriptive and its good use of imagery tickled my imaginative fancy. I could see little elves running around in my head.

The book has a negative aspect of it. Ages of elves were a very confusing subject. Using the word ‘lad’ for aged elves is a weird aspect. Though not a negative aspect, the book cannot be read as a standalone novel due to it appearing in third in the series. There are some events that are mentioned in The Elf Coup that appear to have taken place earlier. The book appears to be well edited since I came across very few errors. It is for the above reasons that I am happy to award this book 4 out of 4 stars.

The book is suitable for an audience of all ages. It is an interesting reading that is educative. People get to learn about the importance of unity and hard work; and entertaining such that the whimsical nature and the existence of the North Pole and elves comes into play.
