Review of Timemaster Era
Timemaster Era by S. Niter is a book about teens who suddenly gain superpowers. They are given these powers by a primordial entity known as Mr. Universe. This entity was there at the birth of the universe and he represents light. Mr. Universe is in an eternal battle against the entity of darkness, the Chaos Void. The Chaos Void seeks to take control of the universe and corrupt it with darkness. To counter the corruption of the world, Mr. Universe created “Superior- Beings” who are tasked with saving the world. These humans have over the centuries participated in various world events, such as World War 1. However, these Superior-Beings have always been corrupted by the Chaos Void, leading to their downfall. Mr. Universe decides not to create any more Superior-Beings but changes his mind in the 21st Century because a big threat is facing the world once again. He, therefore, makes five teenagers Superior- Beings to counter this threat. They are five friends, Aiden, Veronica, Luis, Tracy, and Allison.
I liked how clear the author was about the outline of the story. The events of the story unfold flawlessly, and I am never left wondering what is going on. The inclusion of timelines did not get confusing. The author was able to indicate which timeline we were in at all times. This made it easy to follow along even as new characters were introduced. This was very important, as the reader could potentially get lost if the author makes mistakes in the timeline.
I enjoyed the friendship between the protagonists of the story. They were always there for each other in any way possible. They helped each other come to terms with and control their powers. Suddenly acquiring powers must have been a frightening experience, but they helped each other go through it. This meant that we spent very little time on the characters fumbling with their powers and we got right into the story. I also really enjoyed the final climactic battle and the way the author smoothly set the second book up. It made me excited to read the second book in the series.
However, there were too many grammatical errors. This severely impacted my enjoyment of the book, as I spent the majority of the book distracted by the errors. The errors start from the prologue where the author says “we have to settle this fair dispute” as opposed to “we have to settle this dispute fairly”. Such simple errors would benefit from going through another round of editing. The premise of the book was great, however, the execution was lacking. Spelling mistakes were sprinkled throughout the text and completely broke my immersion in the story.
This book had too many grammatical errors, therefore, I rated it 2 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to people who like young adult fiction, but this is only after the book is revised. I like the idea behind the story and I would like to read more books by the author.
