Review of Containment Breach
In a space station, an incident happened after the death of the famous scientist, Dr. Zayack. The Creatures he created escaped the orb, killing the space crews. Since weapons are useless against The Creature, the government has to make a new plan to terminate them. They are rushing against time because The Creature is a highly intelligent life-form, finding a way to get to Earth. The government finds Dr. Smithton, a keen follower of Zayack, and plans to bring him in to solve the catastrophic accident.
Dr. Walt Smithton is a life scientist who works at a research center inventing new life forms. Following Dr. Zayack, Walt succeeded in creating a colony of a new organism. After studying them, he begins to develop affection towards his invention, making him hide them in secret to prevent the company from taking them away. But when the military and mind readers break into the facility to disrupt his team's meeting, he knows his life is on the line. The authorities got Dr. Smithton and his group into a spaceship. They now have a mission to terminate the alien organism on the loose. As if everything isn't life-threatening enough, the government and private authority are also interfering with their mission, only to compete in playing hero. With his hidden in-sight of a similar species, Dr. Smithton tries to save his team and the rest of the people on the space station without the authorities discovering his secret experiment.
Containment Breach by Wm. A. Yandell is an exquisitely written sci-fi novel I genuinely enjoyed reading. What I like the most about the book is the suspense. The author only shared a slight description of the Creature at the beginning of the book. After the brutal opening scene, the image of a xenomorph, from the famous movie "Alien", came to my mind. The form was not revealed until later on in the story. Rather than the terrifying monster you find in your usual horror story, The Creature took the form of something more natural. But the author successfully adds some twists to it and I found it even more terrifying.
Another thing I like about the book is how the author delivers the story. The story is narrated from the first-person perspective of Dr. Smithton, framing how we judge characters from the main character's eyes. Much to my surprise, I like how the stereotypical characters in sci-fi genres are put together in the book. All the characters make believable reactions to every situation. The character's backgrounds are not explained in detail, but they have clear goals and motivation. The protagonists and antagonists have precise boundaries towards every situation. It amazes me how each character got enough screen-time to do them justice.
The only issue I have with the book is the lengthy first third of the book. The main plot begins in the second third of the book. However, the prolonged introduction helps in building the suspense throughout the story. Not all authors managed to make this delivery approach successful, but it was used well in this book. Just enough to reveal some information and leave enough blank spots to make the readers curious. It did not make me put the book down, so I decided not to deduce a star because of it.
Reading Containment Breach was a refreshing experience. The build-up was very consistent throughout the whole book. Unlike any other fiction story, the ending serves completion. I appreciate how the main issue and the minor ones granted proper closures. I also found no errors, so I believe the book is professionally edited. For such an exceptional book, I rate it a 4 out of 4.
Fellow sci-fi fans out there, this is the book for you. If you like mysteries and adventure types of stories, you might want to give this book a shot too. For those who prefer fast-read books, I must address the slow introduction. But I encourage you not to put the book down because the ending is absolutely worth the wait. There is a handful of graphic descriptions of violence and mentions of murder. Therefore, I would not recommend this book to younger readers.
