Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the first book in the We Are Voulhire series. This book serves as the introduction to the Kingdom, its citizens, and its problems. It follows the stories of Galen, a refugee, Lord Meldorath, one of the most powerful wizards in the land, and some other citizens who would love nothing more than to see Voulhire fall.
When it focuses on Galen, it tells the story of how he escaped from the Island of the Prince to seek refuge in Voulhire. Tasked with the responsibility of managing his new property bequeathed to him by his uncle, he sets out for the tools that he would need. But little did he know that that act will mark the beginning of his adventure. As for Meldorath, we see him oust a corrupt governor. But his real deal will be found in the pages of this book. As for the enemies of Voulhire, their story is also told.
As the first book in the series, I noticed that it served the purpose of introducing the story and laying a very solid foundation on which the rest of the series will be built. So, I found that it was lacking in information about some characters' past. Two of such characters are Lord Meldorath and Rowan. I was left wondering how these two turned out the way they did. Rumor has it that Rowan is not who he claims to be. So who is he and what is his story?. What about Meldorath? What really is his deal? And why exactly did the king act in the manner that he did concerning him? I know (hope) that answers to these questions will be given as the series progress, but I did not enjoy the suspense that comes with not having these answers in the first book. This is what liked least in We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies.
I will say that the thing that I liked most was the style that Matthew Tysz, the author, wrote this book in. Galen got the good fortune of having his story written from his perspective. And the rest had theirs written in the 3rd person POV. The constant switch from the first to the third was exquisite. It made the experience for me even better.
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies gets 4 out of 4 stars. I do this because Matthew Tysz succeeded in getting me hooked on the story by using the power of his beautiful description and suspense. I enjoyed the read. Even though I was unsatisfied with the fact that some questions were left unanswered, I will still rate this book as high as I did anytime. It was also exceptionally well-edited.
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a perfect read for readers who are into fantasy fiction series. Although it does not have flying dragons and the likes, the magic, adventure, and wars will keep readers interested in this genre hooked (just like it did me).
