Review of Fish Wielder
Fish Wielder by Jim Hardison is, simply put, the adventures of the barbarian Thoral Mighty Fist and his friend Brad, who is a koi who can't swim, in the mysterious land of Grome. Although, to call this book simple would be a huge understatement. This world is filled with quirks and weird things which are interesting and funny at the same time.
Thoral Mighty Fist is a carefree barbarian, who is almost always drunk, always seeks dangers, and is too sensitive and morally uptight. This contrast sets up his character perfectly for interesting situations. He is wallowing in self-pity when his friend Brad forces him to go along on an adventure in hopes to get him out of his misery. On their journey, they encounter all sorts of threats and villains, along with some strange discoveries about the world they inhabit. Thoral Mighty Fist promises the Prince of Elves to take out the Bad Religion, a cult group that is planning to wipe them out and spread evil all around. On his quest to save Grome, Thoral Mighty Fist also encounters his secretive past and discovers new surprises along the way. We see all sorts of things throughout the book - talking animals, immortal beings, ancient prophecies, magic spells, and all other sorts of things that might seem absurd.
The book has a funny tone to it from the very beginning. It will tickle your funny bones throughout the book, especially if the reader is fond of famous fantasy movies and books of the past few decades. The book starts as a parody of all the fantasy stories that have amazed and entertained people throughout the past decades, but as the story progresses it develops a character of its own. In this absurd world, everything is silly, the names are funny, people too straightforward, and yet the twists and turns will keep you hooked and surprise you. This made the story more special because even though it was derivative of other stories intentionally, it generates an interesting plot from all the mess.
The writing style is very casual. It feels like the author is just narrating the story to you in person. It was very refreshing. The small details are what hook me to the book. The way Thoral Mighty Fist keeps forgetting simple words and Brad reminds him, the fact that the secret to power to rule the world is sweet dishes like chocolate and pudding, or the way Brad gets irritated every time from the things happening around him. The book gets everything right to create an entertaining experience filled with funny and ingenious references to fantasy classics.
The book is very well edited. The book doesn't contain any profanity, and only has a few fleeting sexual references. I will give this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book deserves nothing less. It is a perfect combination of parody and fantasy which surprisingly results in an amazingly silly yet intriguing story of epic proportions. I would recommend this book to children above the age of 14. This book will definitely be loved by fantasy buffs. They will love the references and the elements used in the book. This is undoubtedly one of the funniest books I have read to date. I am sure it will refresh the mood of their readers with a good laugh.
