Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, by Matthew Tysz, is part of a series of books filled with magic, witchcraft, mages, and many other magnificent aspects. As the first book in this fantasy/sci-fi series, it introduces the reader to the Kingdom of Voulhire. A prosperous and growing Kingdom, yet within Voulhire lies dangers, threats, and menaces that threaten their prosperity. An immigrant, from a war-torn land, serves as the main protagonist. Saved from The Land of the Princess, Galen Bray, who survived twenty years of war, finds himself in a world he knows close to nothing about; as a new arrival under great skies. The reader follows Bray’s journey within these lands as the first-person narrator. Spatiotemporal anomalies are inserted by means of a third-person narrator, giving the reader insights into what seems to be unfolding in this Kingdom touched by magic.
The book has various positive aspects to it. The shifting between the first-person narrator (Galen Bray) and the third-person narration allows the reader to immerse themself as both a subjective and an objective participant. The characters are relatable and easy to sympathize with. The book appears to be perfectly edited. The flow of the book, its tone, and the author's voice is eloquently carried throughout the story. The character and environmental descriptions are rich and vivid, calling on the reader's imagination and awe. The accuracy of some historical aspects inserted into this Kingdom are intriguing, the transcendence thereof pulls the reader further into this world. The limited knowledge of Galen Bray is perfectly inserted by the author as a means to have the reader develop their knowledge of the Kingdom alongside the protagonist. The book also tends to dismiss the gender roles and gender norms that our own societies are accustomed to, which is delightfully refreshing. The book also displays subtle humor to keep the reader's interest, and spark a laugh or two during the genesis of grim events. The precise use and placement of vocabulary were refreshing. I am already anxious to start the next book in the series!
There are a few negative aspects to the book. I only found that the pronunciation of some of the names threw me for a second or two.
I am pleased to rate this book a full four out of four stars, for excellent and professional editing, immersive reading, artistic and calculated writing skill, and the ability to create such vivid imagery through writing.
Target audiences include adults with an interest in fantasy/sci-fi writings. The book is suitable for young adults, just beware that some of the vocabulary is advanced, and could hinder the flow of the reading for such persons.
