Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the We are Voulhire series. The story is in a prosperous, magical kingdom called Voulhire. Voulhire is in a golden age where wealth, culture, and technology thrive. Despite the kingdom’s prosperity, the people have a national identity crisis. Faith, science, and magic are at the heart of the kingdom’s strength and fortune, but which holds the kingdom’s future? As the philosophies of faith, science, and magic play out, darkness and sinister plots begin to manifest. The king pits his sons against each other in the Lands of the Princes. The result of the king’s plan is a savage war that ravages the subject population in the Lands of the Princes. Few civilians escape the ravages of war, but Galen Bary is one of the lucky ones. A distant uncle bequeaths Galen his forge. Galen embraces the opportunity and leaves the Lands of the Princes. The young man’s heart and mind focus on running his new forge and honoring his new homeland, but destiny has other plans for Bary.
The creativity and imagination in the book are phenomenal. The author has created a new and exciting reality where magic, science, and faith go toe to toe. However, the world is not so foreign, just different. The character development is also good. Each character is grounded and lends to the story. Some characters like Bary are loveable, others like Lord Meldorath are mysterious. The author has created a fictional world that is both different and relatable.
The map at the beginning of the book is helpful. I found myself referring to the map as I read the book. The visual depiction of the kingdom adds depth to the readers’ imagination. The plot is also well-developed and consistent. The book is a good foundation for the series. The story is captivating and fluent on its own but creates anticipation for the next book.
I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz 4 out of 4 stars. The book is entertaining, thrilling, and captivating. I enjoyed learning about Voulhire and its people. The author did a commendable job with the storyline and characters. I also think the editing is professional because I did not notice any errors. There is nothing to dislike about the book.
Fantasy novel fans would have a good time with this book. Anyone who likes books like Harry Potter is likely to enjoy We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. The book has a wide audience range among young adults and adults.
