Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
I didn't know whether to like the Emperor of Lullabies or hate him. King Wilhelm Arcolo of the kingdom of Voulhire was both a true politician and a strategist. He made his four princes live far away from him to keep his throne to himself. If his plans worked as he hoped, they would focus more on themselves in battle than on him. He also had to keep citizens and lords in check. He sent Magistrate Dalehei Meldorath, one of his closest friends and favorite generals, to Hillport. He was to take over the Hillport castle from Lord Orlin discreetly.
Allegations were leveled against the former Lord, and the people enacted their laws as they burned him alive in a pit. Agitating for Meldorath, their hero, to be made the new Lord, the King swiftly made him the Lord of Hillport. Three months later, the king asked Lord Meldorath to be arrested because he wasn't placing much value on people's lives. Meldorath left the castle quietly, surrounded by half of the eastern army. There was no trial.
Through the king's recommendation, Judge Eldus Alderman quickly took up the position of the new Lord of Hillport. He came with his wife, Charlotte, daughter Isla, and son Marshus. They had plans and personal objectives to help move the people forward from both of the failed rulerships while focusing on what they had to gain as well.
What I enjoy about this book called We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is that it is based on magic, fantasy, and strategy. It is a well-written book, full of suspense, and many of the characters are introduced one after the other. The one that captured my mind was Galen. He is such an interesting character. I also like Lord Eldus's character. Though he is an opportunistic and overly ambitious man, I like him nonetheless. I feel he was worrying about the wrong things instead of building a strong army with both magical powers and physical prowess.
Matthew created strong characters, both of low and high stature. It makes the book unique and relatable.
The book is a breath of fresh air. Matthew is very imaginative and has broad experience in writing. The book is enjoyable to read and could pass for a Hollywood story. I would like to see it come to the big screen for a wider audience.
What I don't like about the book is that fewer actions take place in it as the book progresses. I expected the intensity with which the writer began the story to be maintained throughout the book, but it dropped off until towards the end. I thought the book introduced too many new characters.
I started to feel bored when the writer was describing the magical powers. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantastic novel, but it is not without its own flaws. I found the ancient and modern blend of the story distracting. I found the book a bit confusing.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed reading the book, and the flaws were unable to get to me. I recommend this book to readers who love the fantasy genre and stories about magic. I found zero errors in this book.
