18 is often a difficult time filled with lots of changes. A new school, new friends, a new phase in life. Amanda is focused on her karate, understanding her unusual six-year-old sister, and leaving her small town for college. The last thing she wanted was to couple that with ancient deities and discover that there’s another entirely different type of world. Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth is a Japanese anime-type story that follows her journey to protect the world. It is a prequel to Rise of the Hearts but it can be read as a standalone.

Amanda is involved in a freak car accident and is saved by a deity who gifts her with the power to summon guns and detect lies, making her an acolyte of truth. Elsewhere, the Deity of Death entices a troubled man named Jamie to become his acolyte. Jamie plans to use his powers of darkness to save his son by robbing other children of their life forces. Amanda must now face off against murderous acolytes, untold dangers, and her fears.

I found the portrayal of Amanda to be well thought out. The fact that she is initially filled with so much shock and doubt, something which is to be expected, makes her intriguing and relatable. We can grow with her as she faces both her inner and outer struggles in dealing with and using her newly found powers. Jaime is a villain that is typical of a Japanese anime, one that has a meaningful reason for his actions as opposed to simple carnage. This creates the platform for an engrossing story full of twists and turns.

An important aspect of this book is for the reader to be able to create a mental picture of the events. Antoine Bonner does an exceptional job in creating the scenery using vivid details and clear descriptions. The origin, mystery, and power of the deities is an interesting read that pulls at one’s imagination as to what may truly be possible in this world.
I was captivated by this book from beginning to end and it did not have any negative aspects that threw me off.

I give Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth a 4 out of 4 rating because it had great fast-paced action and a well-developed plot that you could sink your teeth into. The book was also exceptionally well-edited.

I would recommend this book to all fantasy and action lovers who want to be entertained.
