Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a beautiful book about war, survival, determination, and the problems of corruption. Even though it is a fantasy fiction novel, it speaks to its readers about the many troubles that fanning the flames of war can cause. One of the stories it tells is that of Galen. He was young when his kingdom went to war with three others. He didn't understand why they had to fight the people with whom they had been at peace for a while, but he could see the impact it was having on everyone around him. He prayed for a day when he would have the chance to live well again. It was like someone up there was listening because that chance came when he least expected it. Free of the fear of instant death, he tried to make good use of his opportunity in the kingdom of Voulhire, but it seems like death is a constant wherever he is. Although Voulhire has had peace for centuries, some of its citizens would give anything to wipe that picture of peace from the eyes of other citizens. This book tells the story of Galen and those who wish his new home the worst.
I love the way Matthew Tysz wrote the whole book. He used the first-person narrative for Galen so that I could see into his heart and mind. This helped answer important questions about some of the events that took place in his past. Granted, I did not get all the answers that I wanted, but I am satisfied with the ones that the first person narrative gave me. But what I liked the most was the stories of other characters that were fortunately spotlighted by the author. It showed me that this story did not revolve around Galen, a style that I am used to seeing in most fantasy novels. It showed me that other people in Voulhire had stories that were worthy of being told. These people will, in time, be instrumental in the grand fate that Voulhire will face.
From the page that the book started on till its end, I loved it all. Starting with the writing style, I was awed by how much the author deviated from the usual ones that I have already mentioned that I see every time I read a book. There were also a lot of scenes that brought great suspense with them. These scenes made me wonder about the direction that Matthew Tysz hoped to push the plot. I should say that those directions, when they were uncovered, surprised me. The whole novel was also exceptionally edited. So, when you mention the editing, plot, and story, I am glad that I did not dislike anything in that.
Given the fact that I am in love with this book and found its plot wonderful and exceptionally edited, I will rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Matthew Tysz surprised me. I cannot stop saying that. I really commend the author for such beautiful work he did with this book. It was really worth the read.
I believe that just about anyone who loves fantasy fiction should read We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies. It has magic and serious adventure in it. It is also the first book of the We Are Voulhire series, so the adventure is definitely a long and interesting one.
