Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (Some spoilers)

Post by RussetDivinity »

I read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro when I was in high school, and I fell in love. The premise of the book is that there are certain people raised in special schools and meant only to be organ donors for others. What amazed me about the book was how quiet and gentle it felt. There were no giant battles or intense chase scenes, and it stands out incredibly among all the other sci-fi books I've read for that. Some people have claimed that it "isn't exciting enough", but I don't think a sci-fi book needs to necessarily be full of excitement and danger.

What do you think? Does sci-fi necessarily need to have lasers and battles? Is the nature of a soul and the quiet reflection thereof a good addition to the genre? Does the movie (which I didn't have a chance to see) do the book justice?
