Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
The land of Princes is in turmoil as it has been torn apart by war. Galen Bray, the son of a famous ruler in that land, decides to flee the war. He goes on a voyage to Magnum Caelumin in the Kingdom of Voulhire in pursuit of a stable life. This is just the beginning of what turns out to be an exciting, fantastic, and intriguing story of this land he was seeking refuge in.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz gives the story of the wealthy, cultural and advanced Kingdom of Voulhire. The story is told from the perspectives of Galen Bray and Lord Eldus. King Wilhem, who is the head of Voulhire, faces a number of challenges to his rule. He not only faces opposition from some of his people but also has to deal with attacks from mages of a magical land. You definitely want to find out how the king, together with Galen and Eldus dealt with these challenges.
The book starts rather slow but later picks up steadily. Maybe the slow start was necessary for us to understand what Voulhire really was about, and it sure did achieve that. The characters are built-up perfectly. For instance, I found myself attached to Galen and often felt empathetic towards him. He comes out as composed, involved, and persistent. The story being told from his perspective helped a great deal in me relating to him.
I have to state that I absolutely loved the author's style of writing. His description of sceneries, buildings, and events brought Voulhire to life. The author expertly painted a picture of this fantastic and fictional world. The concept of the magical land of Caromentis was original and fascinating. I loved every bit of how they operated, and the author did so well delivering this idea to us. It seemed like an idea well-researched and imagined by the author.
Themes of politics, family, magic, inheritance, technology, and war are all covered exclusively in the book. I loved that all these were covered without making the book complex. The language used was simple and easily comprehensible. The book, however, contains instances of profanity and sexual content that make it suitable only for mature audiences. It seemed to have been professionally edited as I only noticed one error. There was nothing negative I could point out in the book.
I, therefore, give the book a perfect rating of four out of four stars. I enjoyed and loved every bit of it and will definitely be looking for the next book in the series. I'd recommend it to all lovers of fiction stories involving politics and history.
