The Book of Dead Days by Marcus Sedgwick

If you're looking for a book with a mysterious plot, twists, and a bit of dark magic then The Book of Dead Days is for you. The tale is set in Paris in the mid 18th century where scientists are just starting to figure out more about electricity and what they can do with it. The dead days are those days between Christmas and New Years, where things seem to go by in a blur and the world seems to darken slightly. The story follows three main characters: Valerian, a magician who doesn't have long to live as a dark force he made a deal with is after him; Boy, his young assistant who seems to always get wrapped up into daring tasks for his master Valerian and knows nothing of who he himself is; and Willow, a clever girl who is the assistant to Madame, a singer in the great theater. Together they race against time to find the solution to stop Valerian's impending doom. They must face dangerous men and be sure not to get caught by The Watch, dig through graves to find a book that holds the answers, and travel far outside of their city in search for what they need. All three end up finding the answers but none of them could have guessed what those answers were. Trust is broken and betrayal is heavy along with death within these book's pages. What will they do when they face what Kepler, Valerian's trusted friend and mad scientist, has up his sleeve? This book will keep you guessing to the very end and have you wanting to read more. The Book of Dead Days is a thrilling tale, one you will not want to miss.
