Review of Dracula's Guest
In Dracula's Guest by Amaya Tenshi, Camellia Constance Lilly worked as a 'barista' in between her classes at the community college. Cammy's mother was against her choices, especially her choice of a roommate. Cammy had thought her poverty-stricken life was her biggest problem until a ride in a taxi thrust her into a world she could not have imagined. Unaware that she hungered for more excitement in her life, she eagerly delved into this new world that was filled with danger and strange creatures. However, as the danger loomed closer to her, she may have to wonder whether it was more than she could handle.
The book was engaging with its plot that started with an intriguing twist. Curiosity was built from the very first pages in addition to the author's smooth language. The author's tone created a calm yet 'sinister' feeling that heightened the already exciting atmosphere that surrounded the story. The whole story was built on a popular myth that would draw the interest of many readers. One amazing thing about the author's language was that it made the book an easy read. The plot was not packed with too many details or twists that may have made the book tedious to read. It was a thrilling story that was narrated simply.
Tenshi spiced her story with spicy characters. Cammy was 'stupidly' courageous and selfless. Her excitement and intrigue were infectious. Again, I loved that the author kept her character pool reasonable. The story was not bombarded with a long list of characters with strange names that might be hard to pronounce. The character pool was just right. In addition, the characters' dialogues were sizzling, and their chemistry was almost tangible. The dialogue was one of the strongest aspects of this book. It was fun, sarcastic, subtly amusing, and engaging to read. Readers would highly anticipate the conversations between the characters. Also, the author passed a profound message about love and connection with this book, which was: "no matter who or 'what' we are, we all need someone in our lives."
Fans of movies like Blade or Twilight would enjoy this action-packed book. It was all so ominous, just the right kind of scary to command rapt attention. It was a familiar story filled with nostalgia. I saw the author's creativity come into play with the strange characters she created, like the 'domovoy' that appeared like a hairy old man and the 'brownies.' Dracula's Guest could very easily be translated into an exciting screen piece with its detailed characters and strong dialogue. This book was a perfect mesh of action, myth, and history. It was an entertaining piece that would leave readers wanting more. Thankfully, the ending of the book promised another installment in the series.
This book was an enjoyable read, and there was no part of it that I did not like. Readers would be captivated by the author's passion and genuine storytelling. This book would be the perfect read for readers who love vampire stories or mythical tales. The book was professionally edited, as I saw only a few errors. Finally, I’d rate Dracula’s Guest four out of four stars.

But it's more than that. It is funny and literate, with believable characters. How often can you say that about vampires and other monsters?
Vlad is not portrayed as handsome or even charming, contrary to the romanticized, Dracula character. His strengths and weaknesses, along with his guest's, are fully revealed. There is no false perfection here.
I loved that they stood up for and protected each other when they didn't have to. They formed a friendship (or at least an alliance) despite their cultural misunderstandings and annoyances.
If you like a fast-paced, thought-provoking read with a dash of humor and some history thrown in, I would highly recommend this book!
